Lets chat about routine and short irons (2-3 iron)

Recently, I have learned from reading the book "Golf is not a game of perfect" (A MUST READ) that my best pre-routine, is to just go up to the ball, on the fairway and set up and swing. I spend about 8-10 seconds total. Reading the shot, aiming, address, and swing.. I don't know what it is, maybe its true that if you think to much you can mess up, but I hit almost all my clubs with out a flaw, at this point the only thing I am working on is my aim and calculating distance. Other than that I am happy as can be with my game lately.

now.. The real reason for this post, I am curious on how to hit the short irons better. I am talking about the 2 iron and 3 iron.. I have a 2 iron hybrid in my bag which I just love and hit great, so I am taking out my 2 iron and just going to keep the 3-pw's

I hit my irons really well as I stated, but my 2,3 and sometimes 4 iron give me a little problem. Now as with all irons I should still be hitting down on the ball, but it seems as if the 3 iron I should be swinging it a little different. I mean after all, my 2 iron is almost as long as a 3 wood. So anyone have some tips on hitting these low iron clubs? I many times shank or hit these low irons fat and they go no where, so to replace them at this point in my game, I use a 4 iron or 5 iron, but I really want to learn to hit a 3 iron great..

Stand further away from the ball? What else?

THANKS

Re: Lets chat about routine and short irons (2-3 iron)

I agree on the pre-shot. I always do the same thing no matter what club though. I just swing to loosen the muscles, but do it as I am lining up the shot behind the ball. I always stand behind the ball to align myself drop the iron head to the ball drop my arms and set placement (no practice swing near the ball). Very quick routine. Works fairly well for me.

So to your question...I hit some unforgiving blades and the key to hitting my 3 iron like a champ is to seem to stretch myself out a bit...In other words I make sure I don't crowd my 3 iron and make sure I swing flatter like my driver. Bend those knees. Works for me anyway. Those longer irons might as well be woods. In the cold I cranked my 3 iron today about 220 on a par 5. Almost reached for the 5 wood, but the 3 iron felt pure and was dead straight. Very rewarding.

So in simple terms treat the long iron like you have a wood in your hand...maybe thats why you like that hybrid. Makes you think you are hitting a wood...hmmmm....hybrids are all marketing to me.

I will check out that book.

Very well said.. Thanks.. I never really tried to "stretch" out like you say, though I always thought about it, just never did it.. Tomorrow i am going to the range with my 3 iron and putter... thats it..
