Wedges off of Mats

I wanted to see what other golfers think about this. I am a very consistent ball striker and really have no problem on the course with any particular club. Like most golfers, I will visit the range once in a while just to go through the bag and work on mechanics and impact. (NOT YARDAGE) The range I use is ultra modern, latest technology, with the exception of mats only, no grass. I have noticed that, just as on the course, my ball striking is good with the woods and crisp with the irons, with the exception of my Sand Wedge and Lob Wedge. Is this because of the BOUNCE and the inability for the wedge to get down and under the ball as it will on turf? When I hit those two wedges, I always hear and feel a "Thump" prior to impact, instead of the "Swoosh" on all the other irons. I'm sure this is the problem but wanted to see if others experience this.

Re: Wedges off of Mats

I'm guessing that you swing a little flat...steepen your swing with an earlier wrist break and play the ball closer in to your body and you should be able to hit wedges off a wooden board...that is to say the bounce won't be a problem and you can have a better oppurtunity to make clean contact, even on a mat...

BTW, I hate to practice on mats and almost always need a tune up after doing so as I will tend to shallow out my swing to save my wrists...they are the devil...

Yes, I'm a One-Plane swinger and swing more around my body than up and down. I'm 5'7" and rely on full width to promote squaring the face and increasing distance. While I realize that your backswing is shorter with a scoring club, I may be reluctant to cock the wrist early on the wedges, thinking it's going to take me off plane.
