How to use the power of the right side properly?

recently I have been having trouble with an overactive rightside, i'm right handed. and its results in over the top, severe hooks and "roundhouse" hits (I think i am not able to use the right side power properly)...

I have been told that it is okay to use the right hand, if you are right handed, because this will give your power, but I think I am not using it properly.

I think there is a way to use this power, you just have to get it doing the right thing.

do you guys have tips or drills to help me either calm my right side down or maybe use it the proper way for more power?

Thanks so much

Re: How to use the power of the right side properly?

I think its timing, mainly. If you're coming over the top and hitting pull hooks, I'll try to give you my best advice. I had this problem in the 2003 and 2004 season and I put it to rest with what seemed like a drastic grip change and much work on my swing path.

I had a wicked strong grip. It really made timing a huge factor. If things didn't fall perfectly into sync, I'd hit a smother hook that never had a chance of being a good shot (driver). Making the change to a neutral grip was like pulling teeth. No matter how weak I thought my grip was getting, it was still very strong. I went through a few months struggling with ball striking when I finally made myself grip the club correctly. When I did fix the problem, I went from picking the ball with my irons to taking a divot. So I think that if you pick the ball now and you have a strong grip, my story might help.

Second, if you're starting the ball left of the target line, you need to get on a monitor or simulator and ingrain an inside out path. A 0* path right at the target will work if you've eliminated the big, wild hooks. In summary, a hook or draw is only playable when it starts to the right of the target line.

As far as using the right side or right arm, I'd give you the swing thought of "coil and uncoil". You don't by any means want to think strike the ball with my right hand (as you would hammering a nail). Coil back to the limit of your flexibility, and then fire back from the top in unison, shoulders and both arms as one piece. From there, the core muscles, hips and legs will fall into place.

maop99,

The way you feel a proper right side release is firing your entire right side through the shot. Feel as if you are punching a punching bag with your right side and arm. Remember, you'll probably won't be able to budge that punching bag with just your right hand, so use that body also. If you get that right side and arm timed properly, your distance will dramatically increase. Let me know if this works.

If you'd like info on a simple swing I'm teaching my students visit my website below.
