I started toying with something in my putting stroke and I've noticed a night and day difference in regards to starting the ball online. Give it a try and post some feedback.
I slowed my tempo way down on my putts. Mind you, I'm a SBST stroker, so it might not work for people who take the putterhead inside the line. Anyway, I've been almost pausing when I got the head to the furthest point from the ball, and then slow/smooth stroking it. My putts are starting online a whole lot more. I'm going to try to carry this through into the season...

I putt opening and closing the face on an arc...I tried this and lo and behold...my distance control was a little tighter...I am pretty good about holding a line, but misreads come from wrongly judging speed and breaks...
Here's the rub...
I did what you described a few times and then tried while looking at myself in a mirror...although I felt like I was turning to salt at the swing transition, there was no discernable pause in my swing while watching myself in the mirror...very interesting...in fact, my tempo looked butter smooth...
Nice find Martini...I'm going to go ruin my putting game on the course next time out!!!
I've tried this before when my dad told me about it a couple years ago. I have to say that my distance control definitely improved when I started with it and I haven't regressed any since then. Never tried watching it in a mirror though, I'll have to give that a shot tonight and see if I can find the pause or not.

Interesting! I'm sticking with it and I'll post updates. I'm seeing a dramatic improvement so far.
I found so far that I NEVER fan a putt, meaning I never swipe across it with the face open, leading to a weak miss on the right side. That's the killer 99% of the time on a fast left-to-right putt. The occasional strong pull is still a miss, but in general, my rolls are on-line and my control is much better.
