Driver Practice

Ok, I broke down again. Last Spring when I was consistent with the driver, I was using the Medicus hinged club. I saw the Skilz Refiner driver and since it was $60 less. I went ahead and got it.

I have a hinged iron but it didn't help me with the driver.

After using the hinged driver, I realize that my problem is with my backswing (at the top). I am going to use it in conjunction with lessons with my golf instructor in a couple of weeks.

The weighted Momentus iron seemed to help me with the irons a lot.

I am debating whether the Momentus Power Hitter would help me with swing speed, the Speed Stick, or a golf swing radar would be better.

Heavy clubs are good...the medicus works for me as well...

Nothing has worked for me like practicing set up in the mirror...seems like if you get that right the rest falls into place...

I actually practice in the reflection of my car as I swing (when I do not have a ball to hit).

I like the Refiner since it is lighter and a more realistic feel of swinging a driver (the Medicus is too heavy).

I have considered the Medicus or Momentus weighted hittable driver.

Re: Driver Practice

Rather than shell out the cash for a Power Hitter, you can just take a cheap used driver and add a bunch of lead tape.

Re: Driver Practice

Better yet, get an old steel shaft driver, and fill the shaft with lead shot, then replace the grip. This will give you a 3 pound driver to use. I'd also recommend the Swing Speed Radar very highly. I've got 2 and they work very well. I increased my driver speed 10 MPH in 2 weeks be using the SSR and seeing what works and what doesn't to gain speed.

Where can I pick-up one of these?

OnePutt I have to agree 100%...When you get the swing speed radar make sure it has a tempo meter as well. You will notice by slowing down your tempo, you will increase your clubhead speed.

This is the one I have>>>SPORTS SENSORS Sport Sensors Dual Mode Swing Speed Radar w/ Tempo Timer for Golf: Compare Prices, View Price History and Read Reviews at NexTag

I took an old Yonex driver and drilled a hole in the top of the head and filled it with lead shot, then covered the hole with fast curing epoxy I had from another hobby. It's nice and heavy, but is dead felling on real balls so I use it only on practice balls.

Re: Driver Practice

I was struggling with the driver for a few months. However, after nightly practice with my Refiner Driver (hinged driver), about 20 swings per night, I have straightened up my driver and I am hitting it farther than I was (about as far as I did last Spring).

Good deal titaniummd. I'm glad the hinged club worked for you. I've always had better results with a weighted club myself, but that's what makes golf great. Different strokes for different folks.

Re: Driver Practice

Zmax; the link for the Swing Speed Radar is already posted for you. I'd too would recommend getting the SSR/TT unit. That's the one with the Tempo Timer. Over the years we have all read and heard hundreds of way to increase club head speed, or how to hit longer drives. With the SSR/TT, you can try every one of those tips, and see for a FACT what works and what doesn't. We have all heard that a relaxed swing is faster than a KILL IT swing. But until you try it, you will not believe it. I didn't, not really, not completely. So I did a test. I swung my driver as hard as I could, like I was trying to hit a 400 yard drive. Then I looked at the radar, and it was reading 85 MPH. Then I swung nice and relaxed, and the reading was 107MPH. And this is what makes me laugh when I read on this site and a few others about some guy swinging a little harder on those holes where they need a little more distance. It all sounds fine, but it doesn't work. Heres a fact for you non believers. When I go to the range to hit driver. the first few swings I take are nice and easy, so as not to hurt the old body I'm stuck with. After a few swings and I'm nice and lose, I go back to making a more normal swing. What I"ve found time after time, is that the first swing or two will be around 107 -108MPH. After I get lose, and make my normal swing, it drops down to just over 100. And then I WORK real hard the rest of the session trying to get back to swinging nice and easy, just the way I did for the first few swings. And when I do it, the reading come back up, and can get as high as 118MPH. One more FACT for you guys. I'm not young, and I'm not in great shape. I turn 61 in about a month, and I'm 40 pounds over weight and not nearly as strong as I was 30 years agol

I remember reading about a guy that asked to try this guys driver one time to see if he liked it. Being he was burrowing this guys driver, he didn't want to take a chance of damaging it, so he only hit the ball easy. It was the best drive of his life. So he ordered the same driver when he got home. When it came, he couldn't hit it very well. WHY? Because it was HIS driver and he couldn't get himself to "only hit the ball easy". He went back to his normal hard swing, and it didn't work. Bottom line, it wasn't the driver, it was the easy swing.

I am noticing the same thing now. The other day I was hitting about 220-230 carry (which is about how far I can hit consistently straight) but with the new 'confidence' I was swinging harder and it was going about 205-210 (as far as I hit the 3 hybrid) a day later - I have to back off on the 'effort' to get the driver and woods to relax and swing it as smooth as I do the irons/wedges.

The Refiner driver is helping me square the driver at impact and definitely hit straighter.
