Big problem

Okay so i was at golf practice and my assistant coach told me that if i cock my wrists a little more i would get more distance
so i did and i was hitting the ball further and straighter than usual
but i think it was the 6th hole when i went to hit my iron shot and i was doing the cock the wrists just like i had been all day but what happened is the ball went about 20 yards straight then went way way right
i didnt hit it high at all and i had no direction
this only happened once but it was the first time it has ever happened
does anyone know what could have cause it ? and did it have anything to do wiht cocking my wrists
cause i deffinately like having more distance and just want to know how to keep this from happenign again
thanks in advanced

Re: Big problem

First time it ever happened? Did you just walk onto your first golf course and play scratch golf?

Cocking the wrists is common in a golf swing and can introduce lag or delay in your release which is a good thing if you get the club back square to the ball. It stores energy you can unleash on the ball at impact. But a change like this could introduce a timing issue. On that one shot you probably just didn't get turned in time and left the club face open. Maybe you unconsciously realized your were a bit behind and threw the shoulder out causing an over-the-top or casing move. In any case, if it was only one time I wouldn't worry about it. We all have the occasional bad shot.

Now, what exactly was the advice? Was it the ol' cock the wrist straight up and down instruction?

Re: Big problem

If it only happened once do not make a 'Big problem' out of it. Give yourself some time to get used to the change. And don't re-direct your efforts based on one bad shot.

Re: Big problem

i mean ive definately hit my share of really bad slices but this was different
on all my other ones the ball launched into the air and just went right and right and right but still got distance
but this shot got no distance and went straight right
but i didnt hit it fat or anythign it just went up right and into the woods
soemthing about the shot just felt completely and utterly wrong
but ya i dont think it will happen again but i just was wonderign what caused it

Re: Big problem

Sounds like a shank. I hit my share of them in my teens and a few after that. You can ignore a one time event such as this and it may never happen again.

Re: Big problem

Shank. Don't cock you wrists until club is parallel to the ground on backswing, you will bring club too much up on inside, causing that!. Try and start backswing in one motion with shoulders and keep butt of club pointing at belly button for as long as possible, you will bring club too much up on inside otherwise, causing that!

Re: Big problem

I agree with straight...And Id like to add something...If your comfortable with your swing the way it was BEFORE..go for it..if its not broke..dont fix it...The amount of distance you get from a little more hinge is more than likely not going to affect your game that much..and..Now that you've hit a shot like this with his advice..MORE THAN LIKELY..its always going to be in the back of your head about this one shot..and you may think the next one will be this way also..another thing..dont take something onto the course the first time someone tells you to do something..practice it until you feel totally comfortable with it..then take it to the course and see how it works for you..Just my moneys worth..
