Practice the short game : Wedges, chipping, pitching, putting and sand.
Get the fundamentals of golf, the different type of grips, the alignment....... either from a teaching pro or someone has good knowledge of it, as soon as you could before any bad habits set in.
Practice is the key, and you'll get the idea as you come along, and there is no shot cut but get to know the fundamentals and practice, practice, practice.
Have fun doing it.
its all in the hips.....its all in the hips..... anyway like its been said before, get the fundamentals down, eye on the ball, making contact and yelling fore. If you want to get serious with the game. id reccomend seeing a teaching pro to lead you down the right path to playing the greatest game on earth. O and one more thing, be patient with it. golf is a slow game and the only way to enjoy it is to let yourself get caught up in it. enjoy
Okay so today i went to a local course. and i obviously didnt play to good , i got 112 with no muligans and stuff you know. the number 1 problem i had was i hit the ball and it wouldnt go in the air or i hit the top of the ball and it would go anywhere. :(
Be patient with yourself. Golf has the longest learning curve of any sport: about 3 to 4 years of play or practice 3 times a week for the fundamentals so patience will serve you well. Pick up a copy of "The Rules of Golf" from your pro shop or golf store and talk to the club pro after you've read it. Golf gets easier when you know the rules. And remember the most important "Rule" is to have fun.
My first instructor said " you'll not know what you're doing with the game until you're into your 4th year of golf".
This is based on several times a month of playing and/or practicing and lessons here and there.
If you have the time and the resources to go after this game, any able body person with average eye hand coordination could shorten this learning curve by quite a bit.
A personal friend of mine had broke 90 in his first year of golf, he has the time and the money to go after it with lessons in between the game and practice. It took me 3 years to break 90 and several additioal years to break 80. I'm addicted to this game, but since I could not make a decent living out of it, a recreational golfer I'll be for the rest of my life.
You don't have to be a scratch golfer to enjoy this great game. Playing at a relaxed level actually will help you get more out of this game and make you a better person.
Here is a quote from some golf instruction that you may find helpful.
INSTINCTS: Why is the golf swing so difficult? Because our instincts for the golf swing are wrong. There may be exceptions, so I will say that almost anyone who has had no instruction will instinctively do the following things.
1. Use dominant side control
2. Try to use an inside-to-inside clubhead path
3. Try to pick the ball clean from the turf
4. Take their eyes off the ball before impact
