trouble with the driver

i went to the range today, took around 10 balls until i started getting my iron shots down. then comes the driver. the driver is my worst club that i swing with because i have so many problems with it.
-my balls go everywhere, left/right/sometimes straight
-i know this sounds dumb but sometimes i cant find where my ball went.
i usually tee it up with my own tee on the grass, but today my range was using mats and I HATE THOSE RUBBER TEES!!
i asked my dad and he said that i'm moving my head and that im trying to kill the ball. so i tried slowing down my swing but i just lost alot of my flight on it. by the way i use my dad's driver which is a titleist 983k 8.5 with a stiff shaft.
can anyone help me out? because if i can get my driver down, then im confident i can hit the golf course.

Re: trouble with the driver

I went through something similar a few years back. To fix it, I experimented with teeing the ball in different spots in my stance. Once I got the "towards" where I wanted it, I tried varying the tee height until I got the flight I wanted out of it.
I'd done much the same thing with my irons early on in my 2nd golf life, so I thought that finding the correct ball position was a good place to start. It worked well for me. Give it a try, but be sure not to move it back so far that you're hitting down on the ball with your driver.
It might also be a good idea to put in a good bit of work starting out with the 5 wood, and then the 3 wood before pulling out the driver. Once you get some confidence going with the woods, it'll probably be easier to get the driver going.
Good luck with it. I know how frustrating it can be trying to get the driver working again after it feels like you've lost it.

Go to the book store and buy the golf book "FAULTS and FIXES" by David Leadbetter. This will help you lots to improve your game and ball striking ability.

Re: trouble with the driver

You don't need to be able to hit the driver well to hit the course.

Most beginners would do better to not use the driver at all.

I've played seriously for about a year and a half now, and I have just started using driver the last 3 or 4 monthrs. And even now, at least half the time, I get on the course and can't hit the driver and use 3 wood or 5 wood off the tee.

Don't get me wrong, being able to hit driver and keep it in play is a great benefit, but on any given day, you should tee off with the longest club you can hit straight and keep in play. 30-50 extra yds off the tee is not as important as keeping the ball in play. 2 or 3 penalties from the driver in a round, and those 40 extra yds off the tee aren't going to help.

I would suggest to go ahead and play, and just tee off with whatever club you can hit well. Even if it is only a 6 or 7 iron or a hybrid or 5 wood, keeping the ball in play is your goal.
