Snap Hook with driver - Why?

Hey there,

I have a porblem with my driver, I do hit the ball a long way and about 75% of the time I bomb a drive out with a lovely draw and get a long run on the ball, but every now and then a really ugly low snap hook comes out and I have no explanation as to why this is?!?!? Any ideas?

Is it possible I am trying to hit it too hard? Am I leaving my weight in the wrong position? Is my right hand too strong?

If anyone can give me any advice then please do so. Also, could someone remind me of the basics of where the ball should be positioned for the driver. I never seem to hit a bad ron ever, the only thing that lets me down is this occasional duck hook.

Thanks in advance.

A lot of good golfers fight a big draw or hook. The dynamics of the swing lead into that type of shot. Years ago I went to my local pro when my drives (and every other shot) were a huge danger to all living things on the left side of the course. He was able to straighten my game out, but it took a lot of range balls on my part grooving a slightly different swing over the following month. Check with your club pro and you'll probably have good results.

Re: Snap Hook with driver - Why?

Frequently a snap hook can occur by not clearing your hips or transferring weight properly to the left side. The club head shoots around your body and the club head releases and hits the ball de-lofted, closed, and moving a little or a lot to the inside.

To hit a draw most instruction encourages a set up with the ball further back in your stance; thus, increasing your potential of contact from the inside. Conversely, to reduce your chances, placing the ball forward in your stance even with your left heel and near your armpit is appropriate for most swings with a neutral grip.

There are other flaws that can cause a "snapper" too. Billyg is right. Sometimes a good eye can pick it up pretty quick and a lesson won't cost you much more than a snap hook will over time.
Cheers

That was my first thought as it is the cause for my ugly snappers, hanging back.

Re: Snap Hook with driver - Why?

Turn baby turn. Try this:
Start the downswing with the lower body by turning the hips so at impact your hips feel like they are square to target, almost like a blocked shot. My guess here is you arms and hands are outpacing your lower body causing you to roll the arms too soon and closing the clubface down. If you over-cook it you will start pushing and/or slicing it which is OK as it will tell you that is the problem, just back off a bit until you find the right timing.

Just remember to keep turning all the way through after impact.
