Who can figure this one out?

Checked my lie yesterday. I am a left handed golfer.

Results where with impact tape on the face and on the sole:
2+ toe hit or 1,5+ (degrees)
off center hits on towards the heel, only hit the center once.

With a heel hit on the face and a toe hit on th sole of the club, what is wrong with a) My clubs and/or b) My swing?

Re: Who can figure this one out?

Your irons are too flat and you need to read an anti-shank thread.

Re: Who can figure this one out?

thanks. What happens during a shank?

Sometimes ball goes left (for me) and goes like 4-5 feet of the ground. Is this a shank?

A note though, During the testing I may had 3 shanks but other than that the shots went straight, a little slice or a slight pull

You might be standing too close to the ball.

Just a thought.

What do you normally shoot?

I think that intensive clubfitting isn't really effective until a good swing is developed...too much changes from swing to swing...

Re: Who can figure this one out?

I am 29 HC and its still my first "seasoN" started september 07.

I don`t like the feel of my clubs though and the have to be more upright. Im pretty tall and and when the toe is up the club is way to far away from me or the clubs is too close to my body.

If a club is too flat couldn`t that promote a over the top move? Because going around yourself like the lie of the club implies would not work..HM

Re: Who can figure this one out?

Clubs that are too flat will cause (promote is probably a better word) a fade or slice because the toe will hit the turf and open the face. Misfit lie angles won't promote swing flaws (like coming over the top).

As for shanks, God only knows where they come from. Sometimes it seems you can try to stand 5 feet away from the ball and still end up hitting the #$%* thing on the hosel.

Re: Who can figure this one out?

yeah you might want to stand farther away from the ball and make sure your weight is on the balls of your feet usually with shankers they hang on their back heels of their feet on the downswing they move to their toes which causes the club to move closer to the ball resulting in a hosel hit which is a shank, do you have a video of your swing ?

I think the slice caused by the toe down hit will promote my body to release hard to the opposite direction leading to a pull. When I feel like Im coming from the inside I hit the ground before the ground, slicing it, or raising myself up and hitting a straight shot with lower trajectory.

My best shots is actually when I raise myself a bit right before impact. The ball flyes straight and long. But I don`t wanna do that, because I can`t time the raise consistently.

I blasted a shot with my six iron 160-170 yards out of semi rough uphill yesterday, with the raise.

But the next tee i stayed over the ball and sliced a 4 iron 150 yards.

Im looking forward to adjust the clubs so I can ingrain my natural swing :)

Like they said in bagger vance, you have to find your authentic swing :D:D. Gives me the chills just too say it, yes. I am a golf geek

Re: Who can figure this one out?

If you're chunking shots when you try to swing inside out, you are either changing your spine angle in your transition down or you have some sort of hitch in the downswing. I'd bet on the spine angle diagnosis. Do a google or yahoo search on golf lessons about spine angle and you'll find more info.

The best way for me to describe good static spine angle is to A) have a good set-up at address (posture) and B) rotate your upper body rather than bending at the waist or straightening/bending your knees to a position different than your address positions. Your head and spine should rotate during the swing, but not change positions.

Once in a while when I try to mash a long iron with a big draw, I do exactly what you describe.

Re: Who can figure this one out?

There is progress!

Hi again guys. Got my 7 iron adjusted a little. 2+ degrees.

Funny thing was, I was shanking and struggling the first 10-15 shots.

So I calmed myself down and try`ed to figure out what as I was doing wrong.

After focusing and balance and the transition my shots became a whole lot different.

What shocked me was how little I had to assist the club if I just let it fall from the top of my backswing. The result was that my hands got infront of the ball before I released the hands and I felt for the first time in my life that I was "compressing" through the ball.

Shot my regular distance of 130 yards or so with my 7 iron but with 50% of the effort.

The flight was a small fade (not a slice) or a mini pull (as opposed to the crazy pull Ive had before.)
I felt really awesome and effortless once I managed to keep my balance throughout the shot and letting my arms fall in the down swing.

And I noticed on the impact tape I had that for once the impact moved towards the center (sweetspoot) and not close to the hosel..

I'm so exited but I have to study for my exams !!

Re: Who can figure this one out?

The quick fix is to bend your clubs more upright. I don't know that it will solve your problem long term though without seeing your swing.

You should see it go a bit more toward the center of the face if you bend them a bit more upright too. It's no guarantee though without seeing the swing.
