If its a flat lie and 5-10 yards outside the green, what iron/wedge do you chip with?
I have been told many times to use the 7 iron because thats the easiest, but I resist the advice and try to learn myself to chip with the wedge.
The issue with chipping with the s-wedge is that when I'm not close to the whole It gets difficult to find the right backswing length and Imagining the roll its going to get.
What do you prefer? One short chip swing and control the distances with clubs or going with feel and touch and use higher lofted clubs?
PW if there is room to roll. I'd use a SW if there isn't much room. I used to use a 7, and was pretty good with it, but for some reason I went to wedges only.
5-10 yds is too far for a 7i. A PW or Gap wedge will work better. Considering everything is flat and the flagstick is in the middle of an average sized green, you need to get the ball in the air, drop on the green and let it roll to the cup.

More factors have to be considered. How much green do you have to work with? How fast is the green? How does the green slope? Are you in fairway or rough... if rough, how deep and how thick? I could use anything from 8I - SW depending on the situation. I've even started carrying my LW for certain special situations. I might even use my 25° hybrid in the right circumstances.
I use my 50* gap wedge for most of my chipping. If I only need a short punch to get it up over the fringe I use my 3 iron. Only other club I use on occasion is my 8 iron, if I want to ball to run more.
I prefer the higher lob shots with my 60 or 65* wedge. It takes a lot of practice but I don't trust the ball once it is on the ground. So far, I've never had a ball bounce sideways off a bump while it was in mid air.
Nice to see the quick responses but one questions remains unanswered. Is your chip swing fairly similar for the clubs you use or does it vary?
Thinking about length of backswing and follow through.
A short chip "swing" with my 7-8-9 irons, or my steel shafted LG 8 wood, would be putter-like. A longer chip/pitch "swing" with a PW-GW-SW-LW, etc would be drawn back more (depending on distance), hands forward all the way thru the swing. Much depends on whether you're going to bump and run, flop, or something in between.
i'll chip with clubs from sand wedge all the way up to 7 iron. i all depends on the situation. close, with little green to work with, i'll use a more lofted club like wedges. close, with lots of green to work with, i'll use anything from a 9-7 iron. also don't forget to check the lie of the ball. thats gonna have an affect on which club you choose also.
