About a third of the time I hit a decent drive that has draw, but then I will hit one that starts left and then curves further left...I do the same with my 3-wood..
Also, I pull my irons from time to time as well.....
I am confused about a couple of things....what causes a pull hook....an outside in swing, or an severe inside out swing...or just what? And what causes a straight pull???
If someone could explain these things, I would appreciate it very much......
And, any tips would be welcome too...Thanks!!!
I used to have a lot of pull shots when I had a reverse pivot in my swing. But that is probably one of several things that could cause it. Over compensating for an over-the-top move could cause it.
If you close your clubface too soon on the downswing this can happen. Concentrate on having the back of your forward hand facing the target.
Also, maintain your "triangle", that is your arms should not disconnect. This causes the clubhead to drift. The back elbow to comes and the clubhead closes.
A friend of mine was doing the same yesterday and he looked like he was standing to close to the ball and I suggested he back away a little more. He did and finished the round okay. Time will tell. Or He may have been getting stuck, overturning and thinking too much about his mechanics. Maybe the extra standoff distracted him from thinking too much and he smoothed it out. Who knows what was going on between his ears. Or any of ours.
I went to the driving range a few days ago, and was experimenting, and out of desperation, I put the ball dead center in my stance...I started hitting straight drives, one after another...then I did the same thing with my 3-wood. Same thing...Back low and slow, with a full shoulder turn and a steady head.
I know conventional wisdom says to play the ball more off your front heel for drives, but I have gone out and played twice since the driving range, and other than a couple of bad hits, I just laced the ball. Maybe because I am tall (6'-7'') I have a different swing...I'm not sure...
And even with my irons, I put the ball a bit further back in my stance and tried to keep my head steady with a full shoulder turn....much better...
Anyway, thanks, and lets see what today brings......it's always something new.....

I think this is my problem too...my triangle is disconnected....are there drill to help maintain the triangle?
A pull-hook is an outside-in swing witht the face closed to the swing path.
IMHO there are 2 main causes:
1. Double-Cross. - While hitting an intentional fade you close the face. This gives a powerful pull or pull-hook.
2. Over-the-Top - This dreaded malady affects us all at some point. It seems that most swing errors at the top of the swing or early downswing push the hands out of the swing plane and releases the wrists early. The result is often a weak pull-hook. There are as many cures as there are swing faults.
For me the best cure is a straighter left arm and a longer, more relaxed pause at the top. Perhaps getting less ambitious and shortening my backswing would also help.

Well actually you play the ball off the front heel if you are using a driver. But if you are teeing off with a three-wood then is should be a few inches further back. How about your stance? Is it closed or open? Having a closed or open stance effectively moves the ball further back or forward in your stance respectively. If you made such an improvement just moving the ball further back in the stance then that may be part of your solution for sure. Work on your set up rather than a lot of swing changes.
My driver problem with pull hooks is still lurking around, even after putting the ball in the middle of my stance....so..........I am back to the drawing board.....
I can be doing just fine and then there it is......
I try to set up a little closed (I tend to draw the ball) with my feet shoulder width apart..I try to make sure my head is behind the ball, and I try to make sure my weight shifts to the inside of my right foot on the way back. Low and slow back, with a full shoulder turn...Then back down, and this is where I must be messing up (although probably not the only place).
What is frustrating is that one hole I can lace a great drive, and the next hole I pull hook it into the next fairway...
Anyway, thanks for the tips!!!!! Any more ideas would be appreciated..And I will keep plugging away....

I hit pull or pull hook usually when I try to hit a big drive. What happens is I do OTT because I force the fast one before my hip can release. Either you have to slow down a bit or try to maintain somewhat released hips ( more weight on left foot and actually slight open stance could help ) helps in my case.
Also try John Daly type swing ( overly long backswing ) if that helps, you are definitely coming down too fast..
I hit quite a few pull hooks myself and i think its down to my left shoulder and going left at impact and/or arms going left after impact and/or(!) moving my upper body towards target. I try to get left shoulder going up around impact and the arms at target after impact and the upper body only moves towards target well after impact when ams start to fold.

A little bit of a close stance is not bad on the longer clubs. We all have a problem coming back down to the ball properly. I recently had a round where I was striking the ball well the first twelve holes then things went to ****. Weak hits, a shank or two. I realize now I was just rushing down to the ball, losing my spine angle and plane and going over-the-top.
I have one of those "Inside Approach" gizmo's laying around, (I forgot I had it) and I have been swinging my driver (no ball) with it in my backyard when I get a chance......It seems to force me to swing inside out more with more of a sweeping action.....You have no choice, because it takes just one poor swing and the foam covered arm goes flying. After a couple of bad swings, I never hit the arm again...just grazed it a few times...
I should take it out to the driving range and hit some balls with it, but I admit I would feel funny doing that..I know--- it's silly, but it is what it is....
Anyway, thanks for the tips....I keep on plugging away....and I have been doing better....
