This problem just started about a week ago when I was just out for another day of golf. My driver was great and so was my short game, but almost every iron shot I had, I hit about 5-6" behind the ball! It was crazy, all of a sudden I was duffing everything off the ground with a full swing. Now, I have had problems where my lower body outraces my upper body, so i'm not sure if it could be that. All I really need to know is if I really am just firing my lower body to soon or whats going on in my swing. And what a solution could be. Thanks in advance.
I really like Bobby Clampett's take on this: however you do it you have to get your hands ahead of the ball at impact. Hands ahead of the ball results in divots that bottom out in front of the ball, not behind like you have now. Clampett's point is that however you get the club to the impact position is just your style -- one plane, two plane, nine plane, large weight shift, no weight shift, all arms, dead arms, etc. etc. -- it doesn't matter what your personal style is. But, you have to get the hands ahead of the ball at impact and have divots that bottom out in front of the ball.
I personally wouldn't worry about body out racing the arms or whatever -- just concentrate on getting those arms ahead of the ball at impact.
If you want more info, see Clampett's book The Impact Zone
Not seeing your swing, I can only give a shopping list of ill begotten swing errors:
1 - Dropping down on the down swing. - Maintain arm triangle and spine angle.
2 - Back knee collapsing. - odd but true if the back knee points just ahead of the ball at impact the club bottoms out there. If you make a bad turn, the knee will be pointing behind the ball and the club wants to go there.
3 - Slouching - you make a bad turn and the swing goes downhill from there. Stand up straight, swing under your chin and maintain spine angle (I repeat myself).
4 - Off balance. Hanging back in the swing. Make some 3/4 swings and concentrate on keeping within you base (left foot - right foot). Swing back pointing your back to the target and when you weight gets over you back foot shift the weight forward and swing through the ball (sounds easy doesn't it - how come we aren't millionaires too).
5 - Lastly, where is you belly button when you make contact? It should be pointing at or in front of the ball. I still have trouble with this one. I get better control if my shoulder (and my button) are square at contact with the hips turning with the club. The pros seem to make a much better turn than I do (that makes them pros I guess) so just be as flexible as you can be and be in control.
