When Does it start to feel natural.

Ive been golfing for about 17 years , pretty much self taught with a few help
from dad and friends along the way , but I recently just decided to go get a lesson
from our local UrbanGolf Links. The made me take a few shots with my 7 iron then
showed me the videos of my shots. I see how badly slouched i was and now im correcting
it butt out chest out! seems to work but not very comfortable is is a matter of getting used to?
So that was one cure I need , the next thing he pointed out was that Im just swinging my arms and not enough shoulder turn . He also said I have the best arm swing he's ever seen from a student.
not sure if that was a compliment or not but yeah I guess i'll take it. Now to getting used to the shoulder turns and keeping the triangle intact . Doesnt feel very comfortable and not very natural.
When does it become natural? Probably when I stop thinking about everything that needs to be done in a swing.

Re: When Does it start to feel natural.

LOL, I always pictured my swing as being like Fred Couples, but when I video taped it, it looked like a cross between Jim Thorpe and Charles Barkley, with a little Fred Astair thrown in along the way.

I'm not sure who said it...Hogan maybe, but a paraphrase is, "If your golf swing feels natural, you aren't doing it right". The big question is, does it lower your score?

You made the right choice in going to a pro. Good luck.

1. Charles Barkeley, LMFAO ...

2. Changing your golf swing for the better is rarely comfortable. If you golf pro suggests a change, it will typically be uncomfortable. In general, a good golf swing is not something that feels natural.

It might take a year before it becomes natural.

It shouldn't feel truly uncomfortable though. If it feels truly uncomfortable, you aren't on the right track quite yet and another tweak needs to be made (or you may need some stretching!).

Re: When Does it start to feel natural.

After a few years of playing golf, I finally broke down and took lessons last summer, about mid season. I played worse than before my lessons for the first few weeks, but I kept going and it got better. It will feel completely weird for awhile, but when it finally starts to feel right, you'll know it was worth it

Apparently for some of the geezers on my home course, that "when" never did catch up to them...

You set the bar pretty high by using the word 'natural'. You will be 'allright' in a month or so, if you can get some good practice time in!

Re: When Does it start to feel natural.

Well its the end of april and we got a big dump of snow that needs to go away.
im looking at another 1 or 2 before i get to a course. been a long winter. Last
year at this time I had 2 rounds in by now. Its gonna be a short summer this year.
I loathe the people that live in nice year round places where you can golf 12 months
outta the year.

I don't live in a nice, year round place, but most years we can golf at least once a month through the winter (near St. Louis).

Last year, I got to golf almost once a week through the winter. This year was harsh, and I think I only managed once each month from Dec-March.

But the worst of it was that it was so cold Dec-March that I think I only practiced a total of about 2 hours in 4 months. Last year the same time period, I probably was able to practice 3 hrs a week on average.

But would drive me nuts being somewhere like Edmonton.

Re: When Does it start to feel natural.

I've read some pretty reputable research reports that indicate to make a change in an ingrained habit that it takes at least 60 full concentration reps every day for 21 consecutive days before it becomes "natural". Full concentration is a key phrase here, because you can't put half-effort/distracted reps in.

Re: When Does it start to feel natural.

Well , I plan on making a couple of changes for this summer and get used to the butt out and chest out routine instead of slouching over the ball!! i'll try my best with the shoulder turns. And I think
in the winter i'll continue practicing at the urbangolf links with the computer feedback . I'll be
ready for primetime in summer 09. WHOOOOOOOP.
