Tee height affects curvature and distance?

Maybe a stupid question but ill ask it anyway.

My longest drive on this one hole is 270 yards. Its a slight downhill shot.

I usually have a very high launch with often way to much sidespin, this is also the case with my 3 wood.

Today I hit the 3 wood off a tee slightly tee up. Went high and hard to the left (slice left handed).
I got mad and decided to hit it of the deck.

It traveled about 200 yards and rolled 40 yards with a slight fade (not slice actually).

And the trajectory was quite low and penetrating.

How high should the flight be? It seems like I should play my threewood much lower than I do, this has been my experience everytime I had a tee shot with a wood/hybrid club.

If you don't have another way, is that a sound way to adjust the flight?

Re: Tee height affects curvature and distance?

It is quite possible to hit FW woods high off the deck. You may be hitting them a bit low because you are hitting them 'thin' (out of fear to hit the ground first).

I couldn't be sure from you post whether you were mostly concerned with 'vertical trajectory' (flight height) or 'horizontal trajectory' (slice, straight, hook). In any case, your focus should be on the 'horizontal trajectory' first. Do whatever you need to do to hit them reasonably straight, regardless of how high the shots fly. From what you posted it sounds like lower tee height will help you, and there is nothing wrong with teeing it lower.

Re: Tee height affects curvature and distance?

I am concerned with both. Meaning that I believe there is a correlation between the two.

It seems that everytime I tee the ball up high and get curvature that curvature amplies and puts the ball out of play compared to a lower tee'd shot.

Played my hybrid today and made sure too only tee it up slightly over the grass.
Strangely enough my 3 hybrid with high, but with much less sidespin, only a beautiful pull/fade which ended up straight of my aim. (I have a slight in to out swingplane so a slight pull-fade is a good shoot for me).

Not sure what it is but teeing it lower definately seemed to help my 3 wood and 3 hybrid as well as the driver.

Even if I impart sidespin on it, it doesn't take off and give me instant OB (out of bounce).

I have always had a very high trajectory, at least I think so, so ill continue using this method

Re: Tee height affects curvature and distance?

Nice find! That is an easy, and I would say legitimate fix!

I prefer to keep the ball as close to the ground as I can myself, as it removes options for angle of attack. With the ball on or close to the ground it becomes perfectly obvious how the ball should be attacked, and I try to keep golf simple.

Re: Tee height affects curvature and distance?

I think you have it. It is not necessary to tee the ball high with anything other than a driver. I have always teed my three and five woods low with the top of the tee at about the top of the grass.
