Tee Shot help

First a little about my game. I am a high handicap player still trying to break 100. My short game is getting pretty good, when I use my PW it is like throwing a lawn dart onto the green. The problem lies within my long game/ tee shot. My drive will go for about 100 yards beautifully straight but then, makes a wicked 90 degree turn to the left (I am a lefty in case you didnt realize by my handle) as if it were on rails... I previously posted for help which I did recieve. The grip change and exercises help alot on my iron play, but still causing extremely frustrating tee shot bananna balls. Ive spent countless hours at the range using my driver from normal swings to very slow swings, all with the same result. Thru the help of some friends and other players the common consensus is that my drivers hold to much flex for my swing which keeps the face open. I realize that they are probably right because when I hold the club out directly in front of me and shake it, i can see and feel the wobble.

Im to the point of, going out and buying a new driver with less flex in the shaft. Is there any exercises or tips im missing or am I just better off getting the new driver?

Re: Tee Shot help

It sounds like you are hitting the ball directly on the target line and making contact with an open club face. If you are releasing your hands properly the club face would be square at impact or possibly a little closed if using a shaft too weak for your swing speed. In my experience, too weak a shaft usually means high balls either straight or hooked. Or then again, that could be just me.
Cheers, Bob

Re: Tee Shot help

Try demoing a driver with a stiffer shaft and see if it fixes it. And until you fix the problem, stop hitting the driver on the course.

With a short game as good as you say you have, even with fairly poor putting, you should be able to fairly easily break 100 if you can just advance the ball consistently 150 yds off the tee and 120 yds from the deck and keep it in play.

I would also suggest taking a break from practicing the driver at all. Take a few weeks and forget about it, only practicing and playing up to the longest club you can hit with some consistency. Endless hours of practice will probably hurt you more than help you if you are hitting it that badly.

Re: Tee Shot help

I used to look at the yardage and I would be like okay 4 iron off the tee, 6 iron and on the green. Then reach into my bag and pull out the driver. It is amazing how much my score has dropped once I told my ego to take a hike. I eat up short par 4s with my 5 wood and 6 iron, while I watch friends scramble out of all sorts of crud after going driver.

Re: Tee Shot help

Keep you back shoulder back at impact...it sounds like you are coming over the top and need to work on swinging from inside out to hit straight drives...no shaft is going to fix that unfourtunately...strong right side (for a lefty) and swing your left shoulder under your right thru impact...learn to hook that whippy shaft before you switch it...

Re: Tee Shot help

I think it is pretty well accepted that high handicapped golfers are not going to be able to hit a driver very well. You are probably putting a lot of side spin on the ball because of your swing plane and angle of attack into the ball. You can get away with this with the irons to a certain extend but the relatively flat face of a driver is unforgiving. Get some lessons to develop a better swing and the driver will take care of itself. No quick fixes are going to help you much. You would score better probably by using a three or five wood.
