i have noticed ... with irons and drivers ...if i start my hands lower, say that they matchup with the bottom of my crotch , i maintain spine angle and hence a better shot...i wonder if this is correct and works for others
Re: How LOW do you guys like to start w your hands
Just do it the same for every club except the putter. I use one hands length (right hand), fingers spread out, between the lower belly and the small finger of my left hand. This creates the same torso to arms angle for each club.
Re: How LOW do you guys like to start w your hands
yeah, that is what i am asking, "from the lower belly " seems to be a bit high....i am sure it is an individual body type issue..but have been thinking when i lower hands further down i might be mainting better spine angle and getting the better shots ?

Your arms should hang down freely like a plumb bob. I agree the only exception is for the putter where the eyes should be directly over the ball with the hands closer to the crotch and arms tightly connected to the body.

Re: How LOW do you guys like to start w your hands
I wouldn't use the hanging arm method. It doesn't work at all for me for long clubs. It also creates a different swingplane for each club. I like one swingplane for all my clubs (except the putter).
Regarding a better spine angle by leaning over more, I think there are tradeoffs. The more you lean your torso over, the less likely you are to turn the torso at the wrong time, which is good, but you might lose a little power and you might possibly have some additional difficulty hitting solid. It might be different for you. Try three different torso angles and see what works best!
Two things about changing the torso angle however: 1. Actually measure the distance from your hands to your body. This is critical and should be the same for all clubs except the putter. I use my right hand, spread like a fan, to conveniently measure from the pelvic bone to my left hand's small finger. If you compare three different torso angles, you will need three different hand to body distances. You will notice that with a given club, your hands will not go up or down very much when you stand closer or further from the ball. 2. When you change your torso angle and how far you stand from the ball, you must change your swingplane to match. The more you lean over, the flatter the swingplane in relation to the torso. To find the swingplane, swing back and forth continuously like the pros do when they are waiting on the tee for the group ahead to clear. This uses momentum to carry the club back close to where it should be at the top, especially if you are careful with the line going back. I like to enhance this little exercise by starting with very short swings, so I get the basic moves correct before lengthening the swing.
I believe that the arms to club angle, which is adjusted by raising or lowering the hands without moving the ball position, should also be the same for all clubs. I think most golfers keep it the same, but I just mention it for full coverage.
Re: How LOW do you guys like to start w your hands
Put the club on your shoulder (right for right handers) after taking your grip, bend from the hips to approximatley your preferred spine angle and let the hands drop freely from the club on the shoulder positon so that the club "chops" forward and falls to the ground...that is your spacing...at address push down slightly with the heels of your hands to the ground...hover your club a hair off the ground at address using this push down method...this is your max arm run out...make sure you are fully balanced on your feet heel to toe...relax the arms and swing freely...your hands will naturally be in the right position...

The spine angle controls how far the hands are held from the body at address, given a certain angle between arms and club shaft (the angle between club and arms can be seen by someone standing to your right, looking down your line to the target).
