Back Swing

I am looking for a way to make my backswing longer without losing control. I have been doing golf streches every day. I was just wondering if there is anything else I can do. I would like to get a little more distance. Thanks

Re: Back Swing

Stretching is the place to start. You have to be patient though because your body has taken quite sometime to get tight. Think in terms of a month or two rather than a week to see noticeable improvements.
Cheers, Bob

Re: Back Swing

Longer backswing does not necessarily mean more distance. Possibly a wider swing will increase distance, but that is not an easy change to make.

Flexibility will improve your chances for longer drives, so you are doing the right thing.

Tee it high, widen your stance and let it fly.

Re: Back Swing

If extra distance is what you seek, I'd suggest swinging a weighted club. You don't necessarily need to make your swing longer (just as an aside, making it longer may make things worse as you might lose accuracy), but you want to make your swing faster. Swinging a weighted club will build the golf-specific muscles that you use to swing a club.

Just start slow, warm up with a weighted club, start with quarter swings, then half swings, etc. Don't just buy one or weight up a club and take full hacks -- that's a recipe for really pulling something.

The flexibility exercises will help speed up your swing too. As Andy says, longer doesn't necessarily mean more distance, but faster and better technique will.

In fact, what may get you the biggest distance gain is to have a good instructor look at your swing and try to help you identify any power leaks you may have. You may not need to make a longer swing, just a more efficient swing.

I agree with bignose I wouldnt try making your swing longer if I was you just make it more efficient try using some of the stronger and bigger muscles in your body to increase power for example your shoulders and your lower body used correctley can produce a very powerful effortless backswing also try lifting weights and doing core and shoulder excercises

Re: Back Swing

Thanks guys, I guy at my local club helped me a little with my swing today. I didn't really gain distance but my accuracy got better with just a simple little fix. I guess it really doesn't matter how far you hit the ball because that doesn't show up on the score card.

I really like this attitude right here. Today, this cannot be overemphasized in my mind. There is no place to put on your scorecard how far you hit your drives -- you only enter scores. There are no bonus points for style, or power, or playing with a certain kind or brand of clubs, or anything like that.

All that matters is how many strokes.

Not that I am saying that distance isn't important.. This game obviously gets easier if you can hit 8 irons into the greens rather than 4 irons. But, at the same time, if you can get deadly accurate with a 4 iron, or if you lay up and the chip on and 1 putt, that 4 counts exactly the same as the person who hit an 8 iron on and then 2-putted.
