How much further does 3-wood go compared to your longest iron?
Hi there.
Right now I'm hitting my 4 iron 215 yards if I strike it properly with my normal swing speed.
Right now I'm not decent enough with my woods and drivers to use them so I don't know what my distances will be on those.
I would like to picture how my course management will be when I get good enough to use them, thats why I'm asking.
You can either say what the difference is for you between your long irons and woods or make an estimation for what I will hit with 3 wood, 3 hybrid and Driver
Re: How much further does 3-wood go compared to your longest iron?
I haven't tested this recently, but I used to carry my driving iron (let's call it a 2 iron) around the same distance as my 5-wood, and I would expect my 2-iron to typically roll out much further, due to the lower trajectory. (Sorry, I have no credible data on my 3-wood distance)

I use a 3 wood instead of my driver. I play in a womens league and I am the only one who does this. I can hit about 230 from the womens tee.
Re: How much further does 3-wood go compared to your longest iron?
From you answers it seems to me I could expect 20-30 yards distance between
4 iron and 3 wood
And maybe 20 extra to the driver.
That puts me in these ranges:
4 iron: 215
3 wood: 240
Driver: 260
When I learn how to hit those clubs more consistently
Reason I'm asking is because I want to train myself to be scratch. If I already have the swingspeed to be so I don't need to focus on that but how to use that swingspeed more efficient. (and ofcourse other aspects of the game)

I believe that you are on the right track...it is easier (as supported by the words of Nickalus and Palmer) to first learn to swing hard then learn control than it is to learn control then how to swing hard...keep it up as those numbers once you have control are good enough for attacking any course that you will see...
Re: How much further does 3-wood go compared to your longest iron?
Thats how I like to think. If I feel comfortable with swinging fast I should do so.
I have seen a lot of golfers with what I call a "half" swing that hit the ball solidly and straight.
I have always had somewhat of a long and loose swing but I have not been willing to change that, as long as it's not longer than parallel.
A longer swing will give me the instruments to shorten it if I need to and close distance gaps + give me more clubhead speed and distance that makes it easier to be comfortable.
For instance if I can hit to a green with a 4 iron when a player with a 3 wood has the same yardage to the pin, who will have more control?
So I think its going to pay of dividends in the end, although it might be tempting to learn a much shorter and slower swing.
Re: How much further does 3-wood go compared to your longest iron?
Just remember that total shot distance does not necessarily equal a long loose swing...short and compact swings are very capable of pounding the ball, and are much easier to control...

Food for thought...
I agree. My goal is to have a swing with 90 degree shoulder turn and a the club a little under that "parallel" position you see. These guys I'm talking about have a pitch swing, and that is definately to short for me, doesn't feel comfortable at all.
