Riddle Me This

Looking for some input here.

Do to circumstances beyond my control I haven't been able to play much golf in the 18 mths. But a couple of months ago I bought some used irons on e-bay and have be going to the range with 2-3 times a week to knock the rust off. I have been playing all my life so it doesn't take too long for me to get the swing back after a long lay-off. Anyway here is the deal-----

My swing is not dead on at this point, but I'm in the ballpark. I definately don't have any major flaws in the swing, timing is not perfect yet and not as crisp as I like it, but I I'm hitting it pretty clean, tempo is pretty good, grip is good, set-up everything. So what is the problem right!!

I am hitting averything straight left 10-20yrds. (5-iron), with my little draw. So I figure I am maybe swinging over the top a little. So I double and triple check and I don't think so. So I check my divots and they are right down the line, not too deep-very nice. So anybody know how your divots can be right down the line and hit it staight left.

Re: Riddle Me This

Your clubface is pointing left of the target line at impact which is caused by 1 of 2 things. You either set up with the clubface closed to the target line, or your grip is to strong and over-rotating at impact. You have to find out which one it is.

Use two clubs on the ground for alignment: one for your feet, and another on the target line behind the ball to check clubface and feet alingment. If that checks out OK, then weaken up on the grip until you find the right position for the hands.

I think Derek is right. Is your grip strong? Try a more neautral grip and see if that helps. Good luck!

What do you mean by 'straight left' with a little draw (which curves to the left, for a righthander)? The down-the-line swing (and divot) with a closed clubface would be expected to cause a draw.

As to why you are closing your clubface, the previous posts had some great pointers. In addition, is it possible that you are not shifting your weight properly, hanging back a bit? If your body stays behind compared to your arms/shoulders, it would result in a premature closing of the clubface. You would know from a slightly awkward follow-though move, and a less than perfectly balanced finish position, with your club ending up down your back.

Good luck! It sounds like you are close. It sounds playable also: If you can count on it happening, just aim right a bit until you fix it!

Re: Riddle Me This

AND THE WINNER IS... Funky Fedora--you hit it on the button
After some reflection I determined that the previous owner must have had the lie adj. and made the upright, (I play mine std. or 1 deg. flat, preferably 1 flat). So I took them down to have them checked-- 3 deg. up. Well that ought too put the hosel in the ground.

Thanks for ALL the input I should have caught on sooner but bottom-line is PROBLEM SOLVED
