Re: How do you practice and hit 40 yard bunker shots?
This time of year in FL. you can hit three or four out of fairway bunkers on each hole after 10:00AM and before 2:00 and probably not hold anyone up. Do that a few rounds and choke down with extra club, open it up just a bit, play it back a tad, and swing with a quiet lower body...mostly arms and shoulders and there you are.

A hearty second to Bob38s comment. Be sure to choke up about an inch on the club to offset your feet sinking into the sand. Making the middle of the green your target will increase your margin of error, also.

I have a bunker about 40 yards behind my back door. I wonder if I should just wander over there and smack a few from the 150 yard marker.

Oh...well, as it should be. I applaud your integrity...just because everyone else is doing wrong wouldn't make it right for you to do so. I bet if you look around you might be able to find a sandy area that approximates the consistency of a normal bunker and can practice firing at a target of your choice paced off at 40 yds. Not quite the same but your integrity remains intact.
Re: How do you practice and hit 40 yard bunker shots?
my ususal sequence of events is to initially stand outside the bunker & get the feel for the splash on some solid ground a similar distance from the pin, taking a few well timed swings of the right tempo, then settle myself down into the sand with both feet until comfortable, then regriping that approximate amount down the grip my feet have sunk into the sand, & with on or two fidgets/flicks of the club I'll suddenly find I'll have started the swing & if I'm good n lucky, its come off just as I've imagined the shot.
But of course thats just me. And if I let that old demon Nerves in, allwill have been for nought.
