On going lost swing Saga Back swing too long

Played and practiced a few times this week with mixed results. My backswing some how got so long. The shaft actually hits my shoulder. I am completly loosing it in the back swing. I can not even force myself to take a short swing even with wedges. And tips to shorten my swing. I am at a loss, have never been in a funk like this in my life. Thanks

Re: On going lost swing Saga Back swing too long

I had that problem in the past myself. The thing to do is to remember to start the downswing with the butt end of the golf club (meaning the end of the grip) This can help with putting the club back into the proper position at impact. I also found that if I told myself to take a 3/4 or 1/2 shot while practicing a 7 iron at the range, it trained me to shorten my backswing. Usually, when I thought of swinging those lengths, I was actually swinging a full shot.
Here's my website: if your interested.

Re: On going lost swing Saga Back swing too long

Stowe, go back and read your last thread starting with Shaderunner's admonition to take some deep breaths, slow down, the bottom line being there likely is no quick fix or ONE thing which will bring you back quickly. The more these negative thoughts plague you the tighter you become and your distance from what was is compounded. You are probably not that far removed but have conflicting thoughts because of "losing it up top", trying this and trying that to find the feel that once was. Yes yes, some serious deep breaths, slow deep breaths will be of use.
There are three extremities in the human body; the hands, the feet, and the head. and the function of each is determined prior to making the first move in the golf swing, the head, not it's position, but what is happening inside it governing all the rest. Do you have fundamentals which began the process of becoming a +4 in the first place? If so, it is there you need to start, rebuilding your thinking in order to key on those fundamentals which got you there in the first place. Do you see the process? The starting place is not trying to prevent this "overswinging" you describe, but to go back to your foundation, and build from there again. What is your mental concept of the swing? What are your setup fundamentals? What are your grip fundamentals? It is there you will find the source of returning to prior form. From the beginning all over again. Train yourself to do this everytime you get into trouble and the troubles will not get so deep.

I think Crossgrain is right. Review your fundamentals. Two things that come to mind are:

1. check your grip and make sure that there is no gap between your thumb and forefinger of
your right hand (for a right hander) If there is not a little pressure between them and the club
does not rest on the lower pad of your forefinger at the top of your back swing the club is
unsupported and can easily lever downwards with the centrifugal force.
2.Too much hip turn can also cause it. If you flare your right foot out (for a right hander) this will
cause hips to turn more. Simply place it more perpendicular to the target line.
Hope this and the other posts help!

Cheers, Bob
