Head Position at Address

Been struggling with keeping my head behind the ball with my irons.

I set up with a good shoulder tilt and generally good posture, however, due to ball placement, I can't seem to comfortably keep my head behind the ball.

With my driver it is easy b/c I play the ball off of my left heel. With the mid irons, the ball is just left of center and I find that if I try to get my head behind the ball, I have to lean too far to the right and put too much weight on my back foot. This makes it difficult to transfer my weight and I wind up overswinging, getting out of balance, and hitting poor shots.

For some reason, with the short irons and wedges, I am able to control direction and trajectory better even though the ball is further back in my stance.

I read a tip that suggests cocking the head back slightly to remain behind the ball at impact. However, I took a lesson and the pro told me not to cock my head so it stays in line with the spine.

I'll admit that I do fight a casting move from the top. But sometimes I feel I put a good swing on the ball from the inside but can't keep my head behind the ball and either hit it straight left or with a hook.

When I try and play the ball further forward with my irons, I wind up making poor contact. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem one thing that really helped me is to stare at the ball with your left eye rather then your left. keep bolth eyes behind the ball. And obviously you wana see contact.

If that is working for you, have you considered or tried building up your mid-iron game from that side (the short side) of your game? Perhaps you should be playing your mid/long irons with the ball a bit further back than you have it now.

Re: Head Position at Address

An alternative to head behind the ball at address is to setup with everything centered,ie, ball centered, head centered, then allow the head to drift back during the backswing until it is over the INSIDE of the right thigh, which will keep the spine vertical (front view) as the body coils behind the ball. Depending on your vision orientation, it is best in my view to keep the head square to the ground regardless of which method you use to get behind the ball, which gives you the best perspective for keeping the head level to the ground.

If you are fighting keeping your head behind the ball at impact, the problem may actually be with the LEGS, not the head. Check to insure your weight stays on the inside of the right foot at the top. Without that fulcrum, everthing else in the swing will be askew, and you are then encouraged to shift the body toward the target while attempting to apply the leverage. It wouldn't hurt to make a supreme effort to keep the right knee kicked in a tad toward the target throughout the backswing, then focus on changing direction with that knee.

Re: Head Position at Address

Take your stance then take an iron, hold it to your sternum so that it hangs straight down the middle of your body...tilt your upper body so that the shaft touches the inside of your left thigh (right handers)...that is a correct spinal tilt and your head should be behind the ball at this point...
