fade and draw?!?!?

Hey everyone, I could really use some advice. I'm a 10 handicap, I believe I hit my irons solidly. My question is. I dont really hit a draw or a fade, I can consistantly hit the ball strait, however, sometimes I have a little draw about 5 ft or so over and sometimes i hit a fade about 5 ft or so over. I was wondering if anyone could help me become more consistant and hit one type of shot so I can gain some more control. how i play my irons is I aim right at the flag pin. and the ball will either fade or draw to one side of the green. I would love to be able to play a fade and aim it slightly left and fade it into the pin, or do the same thing with a draw. I don't care which one I hit I would just like to hit one consistantly. Any help would be apprieciated.. Thank you!!!

Re: fade and draw?!?!?

I prefer a dead straight shot as the norm, which is then easy to adjust for a fade or draw. As I am sure you are aware, the slightest amount of varience in hand position during the swing will alter clubface angle at impact, which can account for the left/right syndrone. Without getting into a lot of swing detail, check your setup position for square to the target line; not just your feet but your shoulders too. You may need to have someone check this for you. A little bit of inconsistencey here can cause the left/right. One of the things low handicappers have in common is consistency in their setup.

Re: fade and draw?!?!?

No shot is entirely straight, but the straighter your shot normally, the less the dispertion. If your dispertion is low, then that is good.

As developing a slight fade or a draw as the norm, is not going to make you any more accurate.

My reaction is, if it aint' broke, for gods sake don't attempt to fix it.

By all means read up on or get lessons on different ways of hitting draws & fades. & learn the theory behind them, each have their own uses in different curcumstances.

But if you've got a straight shot pattern I'd be more than happy with that & look to maintain this good basic swing.

Re: fade and draw?!?!?

That sounds more like a grip issue (choking the club, or too loose), or a hair of variance in ball positioning at address, than it does a draw/fade issue. And you say it only happens sometimes, my advice would be to make sure your setup is clean for every shot and just run with it. Like Cernunnos said, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

sometimes i fade it from left to right, about 5 ft and sometimes i draw it from right to left around 5 ft. thats what i mean by that.. I AM HAPPY WITH MY SHOTS however i would just like to be able to hit play a draw every time or a fade every time.. not randomly hitting both. it doesn't effect me too much cuz its very slight, i would just like to consciously do it

Also a session or two with your course pro would help out a lot, especially if you are trying to develop your shot style. He will see your setup/swing first hand and be able to give you precision advice and assistance.

Re: fade and draw?!?!?

I think the answer is in the thread aslax30. Just pay very close attention to all that has been mentioned, stance, ball position, grip and grip pressure, etc. The more consistent you set up the more consistent your shots will be. Precise shot making requires precise preshot.

Re: fade and draw?!?!?

Don’t take offense, but if you can hit a fairly straight ball flight consistently, you have 90% of the game in the bag and have nothing to worry about. Play with what you got.

The best golfer in the world, Jack hit a slight fade, and my friend Bruce Lietzke hit a fade and cannot hit a straight or draw shot if his life depended on it.

So if your shot drifts a little left or right, just aim at the flag and hit it. Work on your short game to make up for the slight drift, that is where the score/money is made.

Even if you learn to hit a fade only (for example) you may still have a +/- dispersion to your shots, and the results might not be much different than the ones you are getting now. You may still over-fade you shots sometimes and accidentally hit straight at other times. At +/- 5 ft your dispersion is good, so personally I don't see your situation as a huge problem.

PS What happens when you try to hit a fade or draw? Do you end up hitting it straight accidentally?

I understand your point; kinda trivial when most of us are dealing with variences in yards, not feet, the old left right syndrone. But I do believe a dead straight shot should be the goal of "norm", especially for someone who is dispersing one side or the other regularly. All it takes is an accelerating clubhead traveling directly along the target path at impact square to that line
