Re: Slowing My Swing Down

A lot of people have had success with the book and accompanying CD of Tour Tempo. The main point being that while certainly the many varied players on the different tours span a wide range of tempos, the vast majority of them have one thing in common: the same ratio of backswing time to downswing time. And that ratio is very nearly 3:1 for a wide, wide range of players -- whether the player is fast overall or slow overall, the ratio of backswing to downswing is the same.

It is an interesting observation, and using the tones on the CD, you can train yourself to follow the ratio pretty easily. It is worth a look.

Downshift!

There is nothing inherantly wrong with a quick swing if you can maintain all the positions and angles...big if...and if again you are having a hard time slowing down it is possible you are just not built to swing slow. It is a mental issue more than physical. I think in terms of slowly accelerating to the "top" then taking my time with the transition, and slowly accelerating back down through the ball. One of the better bits of instruction I had in my youth was from a pro who told me to just let it fall back to the ball, don't force it. I think it is important to know the clubhead is traveling at maximum velocity for only a very short amount of the swing. If you spend your energy early, you don't have much left for the ball. Quick is ok if you are still accelerating at impact. You might try to start your take away as slow as you can and gradually accelerate from there. Hope this helps.
