arms at impact

ok, I have been working this stack and tilt thing and shot the best round I have ever played today. 84(for real 84). I usually keep my right hand(righty) straight after impact and have been hitting it well. I was messing around with it a little bit and would throw my arms straight at the ball at impact and gained some yardage but would hit it about 30 degrees right the few times i tried it. Im just wandering what goes threw your head about your arms at impact(should you make yourself straighten both arms at impact and maybe a little after. thanks

Re: arms at impact

I know a lot of golfers do this, that, and the other with their arms and hands during the course of the downswing, but in my view you are missing out on something by having to do so. I view the arms as a bridge between the shoulders and the club. They are by no means passive, but their primary function during the course of the upswing is to maintain position, which is quite enough work for them to do. If proper position is achieved at the top, it is just a matter of allowing it all to unwind, and the arms will do so in perfect time. When you start trying to do something with the arms on the down, you then complicate the timing issue and can cause inconsistencey. If you are doing it correctly, you will feel the power build up in the trailing arm during transition, the bicep will bulge, and you will feel it all unleash into the ball, not make it happen. The correct position at impact is to have the arms return to address position still relaxed as they were at address. I am not saying this to try and change what you are doing, just giving you a different approach to think about. If you would like to know more,I'd be happy to expand on it further Just let me know.

Re: arms at impact

I personally like not thinking at all about my arms at impact. I am not very familiar with the Stack & Tilt swing, but if they advocate straightening both arms at impact I'm fairly surprised. Some of the best ball strikers in the game throughout history have had bent back arms at impact.

Find some down-the-line pics of Trevino, Furyk, Hogan or Daly and you'll see very bent right elbows at impact. Very common amongst a lot of great ballstrikers.

See the attached photo for a great example.

Try this experiment. Take an old iron (something that isn't very valuable to you) and put the head against something very solid. (The base of a doorjamb works very well for this.) Now, take your golf grip and impact position and try to bend the shaft. For most people, you will feel like you get a lot more bending force when you bend your back arm.

Certainly it isn't a requirement for power, I'm sure there are many examples out there of players with straight back arms at impact. But, like a lot of things in golf, there are precious few absolutes. But, there have been a great many number of well-recognized top ballstrikers who have bend back arms at impact and it is a power move.

Re: arms at impact

thanks for the advice,I agree with you crossgrain, I have never hit the ball straighter in my life, and never even think about my arms. I just noticed that when I purposley straighten my arms I gain distance, but I hit them right every time. I will leave it alone and keep it simple, I was just making sure I wasnt missing out on something. thanks guys
