I've seen a few players that can skip the ball off water, how do they do it? I have no water on my courses, except for a canal, but i wouldn't attempt it on that! I'm just interested in how they alter their technique, it's a weird ball flight.
I've seen Butch Harmon do this on a video. My only question is, I wonder how many takes it took him to pull it off. I have never even attempted to try this so I really can't tell you how this is done. I would imagine it's kind of like skipping rocks with a really low, almost horizontal ball flight that skips across this water. There's actually a driving range here where you hit balls into the water. Maybe I'll try it out just for fun there.
We have a par 5 finishing hole at a course I play frequently that has a big pond right in front of the green. The group I usually play with, if we aren't going to hold anyone up will try and skip a ball across the pond onto the green for a buck a person. I use my 5 iron and put the ball way back in my stance almost to my right foot and hit a punch type shot. The ball will skip three or four times and keep on going. If it doesn't hit the rocks on the end of the pond it will hop right out of the water and hopefully on the green. We have had three of us on the green before. We have also had all four of us lose our balls in the drink. This is where keeping a couple of scruffy balls somewhere in your bag comes in handy.
I see skipping all the time, there is a water hazard about 30 yards in front of the first tee, people that "duff it" or "top it" often see their ball bounce across the water :)
if i want to skip one on the water I usually take my 3 wood or 2iron and play it way back in my stance, then swing through almost like a punchdown shot and make sure i dont turn my wrists over, keeping my glove pointing at the target the whole time, it'll usually skip ..we usually throw in a buck to see who can get the most skips :)
They have an informal "contest" at the Masters on one of the practice days I believe. All the guys line up in front of the pond on 16 as they are passing through and try to skip it across. Interesting to see when they show it on Golf Central that night.
I know I've accidently skipped a few across the pond on our course. It is funny I think when you just blade one bad and it hits the water and skips across. It seems to me that it adds a lot of backspin too as the shot usually stops after one bounce after is leaves the pond. Your playing partner is usually quite annoyed with your good luck too!
Yes, it is during the practice rounds at The Masters. To skip the ball, you take a relatively low lofted club, play it back in your stance and hit a low hard shot which will bounce off of the water since it is coming in at such a low angle.
I work with a guy who skips it all the time on a certain hole using a driver. It's about a 180 yard carry over the pond . . . he hits the water about halfway, the ball skips three or four times, and then always pops up and onto the fairway on the other side.
