Question 2-iron or driver??

I am starting to have trouble off the tee with my driver after I rebuilt my swing. Its shorter now and faster, but I am slowly getting more inconsistant. I also have a 300+ drive so being inconsistant can be very dangerous. I have been thinking of switching to mainly a 2-iron off the tee. Do you think this would be smart sience I only hit it about 215 opposed to 315 or should I work on the driver more??

Go to the range and work on your Driver...but until you get it figured out just hit an iron.

If you can hit your driver 315 yds, I agree with the advice above - go to the range and work on your consistency. If you can hit a 2-iron, there can't be too much wrong with your swing.

Maybe you should back off the driver a bit and float it out there 290 yards or so. The "loss of distance" would be compensated by finding the fairway.

Good luck.

I've been debating the same thing. I figure, that especially with shorter par 4's, if I can hit a 4 iron 190 or so, and usually dead straight, why not hit two 4 irons into the green, or even a 4, then a 160 yard 7iron? Just can't get it out of my head that you're supposed to hit wood off most tees (that and when I *do* get it together, I can hit a 3 wood 270ish-plus off the tee. I just can't get it together as regularly as I once did. *sigh*)

You carry 14 clubs, you should be able to hit them all, but I guess that's what the range is for!!!

Ok ill go try with my driver. The only thing I hate is imagine hitting a shot 315...but for all 315 its traveling right or left! Iv often hit my shot right on the 11th tee and found my ball on the 17th fairway! I guess i got alot of work to do.

Sounds like you are more than a recreational golfer and one who should always carry and be able to hit a driver. Work on the driver. Most 2-iron lofts are 19*. When I had trouble hitting my driver, I used my Callaway 3-wood, and still hit the ball just about as far. Try the 3-wood option, but work on the driver at the range. When I played as a teenager, I never had a driver I liked to I used my 2-iron to tee off. Now that I can hit my driver, I rarely use my 2. My next set even come without one (since I carry a gap, sand, and lob, I need to take it out anyway to keep 14 clubs in the bag).

I know what you mean about getting the Driver out of your head from the Tee box. Even when you loose control you can't leave it and pick up your long and straight 2 iron or even a 3. A guy here proved that he could shoot par with a 6 iron even on a Par 5 with his 6. But that MACHOism comes out when your on the tee box with your buddies. GO BIG OR GO HOME! Shoot go straight or shoot boogie!

Most golfer probably could. I have thought about this many times. Take a 580 par 5. I can hit my 6-iron 190-200 yards. Three of these = 570-600 yards. Machoism does take over, but it also depends on the course layout. If I remember correctly, Seve Ballesteros first learned how to play golf with a 3 iron. And that is all he had for some time. He learned to play every shot with that 3 iron, even bunker shots.
