My putting issue

So lately i've just realized from my friend that when i put, my ball tends to bounce first then roll. I don't really know why I'm doing that. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: My putting issue

Just a quick observation since we can't see your stroke; but, you are probably hitting the ball with the shaft vertical or leaning aft slightly. Most good putters hit the ball with their hands slightly ahead of the putter head at impact. This de-lofts the putter and gets the ball rolling straight. If this isn't applicable your putter probably has too much loft and you need it checked.
Cheers,
Bob

Re: My putting issue

You might be hitting the ball on the high side not evenly when you strike it and it causes it to jump first ..Meaning your picking the club up to early.A good follow through on your put might be all you need

Re: My putting issue

See if your putter blade is lofted. When I started playing (during the Polk administration as I recall) all the putters had 4 - 6 degrees of loft because most greens were grainy, slow and a bit bumpy. The initial hit lofted the ball slightly above the green level and insured that the putt at least started on line. The "modern" greens which are fast, hard and quite smooth didn't exist much before 1980.

Re: My putting issue

maybe try leaning your hands toward the hole right before you take your stroke and as you follow through.

JL: Are you right-handed? If so, casually hit a few putts with just your right hand gripping the putter. It works for me! In fact, I now grip the club with my right hand only, then place my left hand on the grip as an afterthought only (I don't really grip with it, it is just resting on the grip when I make my putting stroke): My putting results (especially 'roll' and distance control) are much better now.

Re: My putting issue

Don't most putts bounce or skip a little right after impact? That's what the slow motion videos show. The Yes putters with C grooves are supposed to combat that. But, the problem here is probably hands behind the putter head at impact, or as Billy said, too much loft.

Don't you love the old videos of Arnold using the wristy slap at the ball? Looks like he's putting on shag carpet.
