I am new here. I have been hacking for off and on 20 years. I have taken lessons and both pros I worked with said that they like my swing, but I don't follow thru(rolling wrists) the swing which give me a high week fade. This is from the range. My playing compadre, who is an excellent golfer, says that my practice swing and what I eventually swing is 2different swings. Practice swing great, real swing short back swing and de-excelleration thru the ball. He says if I were to hit the ball with my practice swing I would drive like him. Right now I would be lucky to drive over 230 yards. I say I average 200 of of the tee. 3 wood 180. 5 iron140. I know my real swing is different, but I can;t get it in my head to do the same as my practice swing.
Its really hard playing golf with the thought of hitting the ball rather than swinging down a target line; but, it is especially true when you are getting started. What happens is the mindset of hitting the ball brings your arms and small muscles into play and it throws you out of sync, robbing you of your greatest sources of power the legs and core muscles. Imagine a pitcher throwing the ball without legs and core muscles. Pretty ugly, huh?
Your practice swing is sweet because you have no ball to hit. Try thinking of the ball as a convenient aiming device with the target line bisecting it. The ball only marks your entry point on that line which is your true mission. Stop hitting the ball and begin swinging on a target line. Welcome to Golf Rewind,

This is quite normal and is all in your head. Something magical happens when you put the little white ball down and try to hit it. You go stupid with a decease called HITIDUS and try to hit it.
The key to getting over HitIdus is lots of practice, and practice like you play. Don't just go to the range and swat balls. Go through your normal routine, pick a target, and play like it is for real.
What it really comes down to is confidence, knowing you are going to hit the shot, and not freeze up over the ball.

You really do need to do this, especially going thru an actual routine, just as you're getting ready to hit a real golf shot. That flags aren't just on the range to measure distance. One thing I do in my preshot routine that helps SO much is imagine my target, but then pick out a spot that's in line with that target, 12-18 inches in front of my ball. It's a great aiming tool and once you get the hang of it, it really is effective.
