I am currently taking a class taught by a PGA pro and things are not going so well. Prior to the class I was playing well, shooting in the 80's, and shooting in the 70's often, now since I have been taught a new grip, I have been having all kinds of trouble. I have noticed that I have developed the shanks, hitting off the hosel is no fun. Before the class I never had the problem. I am confused as to what I should do, I am trying to get back to my old grip, but I find it difficult to get back to. This is weird, but the struggle in this game only encourages me to work harder. I guess that is a good thing.
Keep working on what he showed you. The funny thing about lessons is that things usually do get worse before they get better. Practice and master one step at a time. Good Luck.
I agree. When it comes to learning something new, you'll get worse before you get better. The thing is, it sounds like you were playing fairly well before you took the lessons. Can I ask what the main weaknesses of your game were before lessons? If it's your short game, I wouldn't think changing your full swing grip would help that much and if it's causing you to ruin the rest of your game, it's not warranted. I guess it depends on your situation but you may want to give it some time before you give up.
I think you need to have faith in the teacher. If you're already looking to go back to your "old" grip, it doesn't sound as if you trust the instructor or his/her methods.
You should speak with the instructor and find out what he/she can do to straighten you out, now! I know the old adage "you'll get worse before you get better" holds true for golf instructions, but golf needs to be fun, and the shanks are no fun. How can you practice anything you've been taught if you're shanking?
If the instructor can't help you, I'd find someone else, fast, before it gets worse.
I understand that you aren't supposed to get used to the new instruction, but I wouldn't expect to get the shanks from it. Before the class, I drove the ball really well, I think I experienced some problems with the short irons. I honestly thought that my problem was happening because I was almost following the ball as I hit it, a la Duval, Sorenstam. Normally when I keep my head still I compress the ball nicely. I just figured that he would help me work on that.
I am assuming you have taken a greoup lesson. By your first post I am surmzing this. If your game was that good you should take a private lesson. Group lessons are for beginners only, maybe why the pro changed some of the basics, then maybe not. I would follow the advice from above and go talk to the pro. If he can't resolve this find another teacher. Hope this helps.
I agree with yall's comments. I am taking a group lesson type class, I mainly took it because my college pays for it so I could use the range freely, and the course. I intend to find another PGA Pro, but he reason I wouldn't have done that before, is money. Don't have a lot of it. I guess I will just have to wing it myself. I appreciate your comments.
