Teaching Alignment and Setup to New golfer

My teen is new to the game but his swing is prettty good. He hits to the right a lot no slice just hits to the right. Gets it up in the air nice consistently hits about around 200 yds.

I have been having him setup and then I put a club at his toes sometimes to show him were he is really pointing.

Also I notice he takes a nice practice swing then when he moves up to the ball he tends to move the club up to the ball more than his feet so he ends up reaching sometimes. I had him take his practice swing standnign behind the ball then just walk up and hit. This helps on drives but with irons in the grass I think you need to take you practice swing next to the ball to get a feel for the lie angle.

Any teaching tips would be appreciated.

Re: Teaching Alignment and Setup to New golfer

Hi Mopar, if you can, schedule a few lessons with a PGA golf instructor before he gets too far down the road.

In general, now would be a good time to start building a little pre-shot routine while practicing and playing. Your son needs to learn to build his stance the same way every time. If he is incorporating a practice swing utilizing the same target line and lie is a good idea. After the PS have him move into the ball by placing his club behind the ball then move into it with the body. He should bend from the hip sockets just enough to allow the arms to hang normally straight down tension free. For the longer clubs FW,s and Driver the arms will extend outward more; but, still not a lot as he will be standing a little taller with less bend at the hips. All your practice sessions should be done with a practice grid set up with clubs or something else defining the heel, hip, shoulder line and another the ball target line.

Some things that remain fairly constant with various clubs are: the angle of the shaft to the arms when viewed from behind. The heels, hips, and shoulders parallel to the ball target line. The spine angle should be relatively straight, chin up; but without tension. When viewed from across the target line looking face to face your son's spine should be angled toward the rear a bit causing the aft shoulder to be lower than the front.

These are a few suggestions to get started. I really think a few lessons would pay dividends.

Cheers, Bob

Re: Teaching Alignment and Setup to New golfer

Alignment is easy to teach. It takes two clubs, or two straight lines.

The first line is directly behind the ball dead on target line. The second line is on the toe line in parallel with target line. Use the toe line to square up the feet, knees, hands, and shoulders.

At first the student will swear and be **** he is lined up left. It is an optical illusion they must get over and use too.

In addition you can use a cardboard box placed just outside the ball to keep the student from coming over the top because if they do they get real negative feedback hitting the box first. If they are a slow learner use a 2x4, because once they hit the board once they will never do it again once they heal up. FWIW I use a Styrofoam packing blocks on my students.

Thanks for the tips and He will definitely get a few lessons at some point.

He has a pre shot routine just is working for him yet. He stands about 8' behind the ball to eye up the shot. Walks to the ball takes a practice swing and sets the club head down. He then move the club to the ball followed by moving his feet up. I think he does not always move his feet up far enough and ends up reaching .
