Hips

So in the past week i have learned that my big blocks are a result of not my hips spinning open, but from my hips sliding forward laterally at the top of my swing just before i even start my downswing. Just working on eliminating that has greatly improved my game...

My big question now is, is there any sliding back and forth in the hips? Right now im trying to swing the club with zero slide/sway backwards or forwards until after impact. Is this right? Or is there some degree of hip slide before impact in the backswing or downswing????

Ideally there is no lateral movement of the hips. But who among us has an ideal swing, right? Harvey said (and that's good enough for me) that if you move at all, move behind the ball, in other words, back. It's still bad to do that because then you want to "lateral" forward, which a lot of people do. The one main thing you cannot do is lateral past the ball or ahead of it. The hands don't have time to catch up. That's why you hear the term "stay behind the ball". If you keep you hips centered and pivot instead of sway, you'll be much more consistent...you can then fix a block by moving the ball forward a little in your stance or fix a smother by moving it back.

As always, let us know how you're progressing. Love these late-night sessions...lol.

I have found that the ball will go further if you move your hips foreward and backwards. However, it took some getting used to, starting off, I was very venerable to a slice. Moving you hips should add at least 30 yards to your drive...

g'day

I think understanding that the swing is about a centre answers the question of the hips. If the swing centre moves then there must inevitably be inconsistency in the swing path don't you think? If there is a lateral movement to the right then there must also be a lateral movement to the left to compensate.

On the back swing, the centre rotates around the braced right leg. I think the problem comes about because there has to be a weightshift just before the downswing so that the left leg becomes the new pivot point. As long as the centre rotates where it is, this will not become a problem. Any major lateral shift must create problems though. It also introduces another complicating factor into the swing. What do you think?

i try to keep my hips straight and not moving during my backswing at all and just rotate them thru the impact zone thru my follow thru, i got this tip from a little kid at the range one day when he told me that i was moving too much in my hips, so i thanked him and he watched me hit a couple and i gave up a little ditance but maybe 5 or 10 yards at most but it was going high and straight so i thanked him again and bought him a drink for his help......well now i have been doing that same thing for a few months and i got my distance back and i am hitting it pretty straight so if that little kid is in here thank you again
