I moved this thread to the "Golf Tips" forum for you. Anyway, the question you ask is one asked by many beginners but unfortunately, there is no right answer. Like Ernie Els. He could hit an 8 iron 180 yards but me, I don't think I could hit one more than 140 (unless wind was aiding me) and I'm not THAT bad of a golfer.

The only advice I can give is to hit the range and figure out your distances for yourself. Then, when you're out on the course, take more club on your irons than you think you need.

golf noob:don't know if you are young or older as a beginner, but there are many variables with regards to distances/clubs. Some companies have stronger lofts than others, so this is a major factor. Also it depends on your swing speed and which shafts you have in your clubs.

stiffer shafts yields straighter shots and more control while a more flexible shaft yields more distance but less control as a rule of thumb.

another variable is how you hit the ball. if you hit the ball first with a descending blow, you will impart more spin and a longer shot for irons.

as a beginner, you might save yourself alot of aggravation by getting some good instruction on how to swing from a pga pro first, then try to groove your swing and then you will find the distance and control needed for each club and hopefully you won't discover that golf is a 4-letter word, lol.

Like Stagday said, go to a pro. It will be the best money you probably will ever spend.

I had this very same question and like advised i went to the range and just starting hitting each club at the 150 yard marker, after a few warm ups I started to hit it like i would and i was consistently hitting my 7 iron about 145-155, and my 6 iron about 155-165, and so forth on down the line, recently the only clubs i can hit consistently are my LW-6 iron, but i have been hitting the 5 iron about 155-165 recently but not consistent......

give it a try and see about how you are hitting it.....

also i have attached a chart i found one day that might help ya get going to see about where you should be hitting it....I cant figure out how to attach an image on here yet....maybe PM me your email addy and i can send it to you.....
