standing to close??

I am a decent golfer (3.7 handicap) and recently I've started fading and or slicing the ball really bad..normally I hit a draw. I was just swing in the house last night and it hit me that the butt of the club was more or less right in my crotch! I guess if I'm standing this close I've got no choice but to have an outside in cut swing...?

that is weird cause my pro told me to do just the opposite, i was standing too far away......couple of hits later and it was pretty good......

i am no where near as good as you but maybe are you turning your wrist over?

I don't know what the heck I'm doing, but its getting annoying! lol

I never slice (until now I guess). It just seems like if I'm standing to close I cannot get the club going from the inside to produce that draw ya know? Maybe it is just the opposite...I don't know because i've never been to a pro. Maybe that is what i need.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting my wrist over and through.

Who knows...I guess it could be a number of things. golf if funny like that.

wow 80 bucks!!!

mine is 45 for 30 mins and 80 for 60 mins.......

yeah i know it is expensive to get them but i need them more than you since my handicap is WAY bigger than yours......

maybe you can have someone tape your swing and you can take a look at it that way, not sure how to correct that my friend, still way too new to the game......

If the butt of the grip is in your crotch, you're way too close. Get a little separation--maybe 5 inches or so from your fly. Then concentrate on hitting the ball on the rear inside half of the ball, like you are trying to hit a baseball to right field. Make sure that you're relaxed and complete the swing. Your draw should be back. Also, check to make sure that your stance isn't getting too open at address. To hit that draw, it should be a bit closed.

If you start hitting big hooks, you've overcompensated.

Yeah, I think that was a part of the problem too...I've started getting to open at address...cause to start the year I was hooking, so I got a little more open and cured the hook and was just hitting the ball sweet for about three weeks, not its a fade/slice...lol. I'd love to have a big hook show its head again, I can work with it.

the butt of the club I guess isn't right in my croch area...I overaggagerated. If I make a fist I just bearly put a fist between the butt of the club and my zipper.

A good measurement for distance from the ball. At address, your left hand (assuming rt. hand golfer) should be directly below your chin. If it is inside your chin you are too close and possible too upright in your posture. If it is outside your chin then just the opposite.

could all be in the wrists
i.e. your not releasing the clubhead early enuff meaning its open at impact

g'day kiwi

What do you mean by 'releasing the wrists too late"? I believe that any intent to use the hands and wrists independently only adds an unnecessary component to the swing. Do you release your wrists consciously in the downswing? How is this done?

it is possible to consiously keep the clubface open thru the swing "fading" or closing it "hooking"
a slight grip change will help this
but if your tense ...or your timing is slightly out you could well have an open clubface at and thru impact
afterall ....you well know theres only 2 things that make it slice ...swingplane and clubface at impact
i may have mentioned id found something similar in my own swing ....well things sure as **** have changed since
today i shot 5 under at a local countryclub
in galeforce winds with majorly boggy underfoot fairways
freaky how simple things can effect ya in major ways

I just developed a similar slicing problem, and have figured out why. I was doing almost exactly what kiwi-hacker was describing. I just got a new set of offset clubs and was paying close attention to getting my hands through the ball - assuming that the clubface would square up because of the offset. By looking at the marks left by the driving range mat on the bottom of the clubs, I determined that my hands were too far ahead of the clubhead, which left the clubface open.

But, standing too close can also cause a slice. A few years ago when I took a lesson, the pro had me move away from the ball, which cured my slice. Now when I address the ball, I just make sure there is a good 5" between me and the end of the club.

rotation and head position

i use a very flat swing plane ...if i dont rotate my shoulders/hips on the backswing i rip the club inside the line on the follow thru .....which causes the slice
also work on keeping try feeling your head BEHIND your hands at impact
