Impossible to say. You might hit one 95 all maxed out and somebody else 120. The information that is priceless is what your particular yardage is at that moment in time and it's relationship distance-wise to your PW and SW. J.B. Holmes can probably hit an AW 150 yards. Will that help you get it in the hole?
Personally, I don't swing that hard until I get to 8 iron, and then only when I have to hold a tough green or get the ball up high...but I'd say 8 iron is the start of when I start to swing "full" with 9-wedge being less than full...I have more control over my swing and the ball this way; these are the "scoring clubs" after all, if I want more distance I club up and get on with it...
...I will say that while a 150yd pw won't get you in the hole any faster, the well rounded player who is able to hit a 150yd pw but plays it no longer than 120 and gets off the tee decently will have a decided advantage going into the green over a shorter hitter...distance in golf is an advantage and it does matter, so long as you can control it...no one said you have to hit the ball as far as you can when you swing though...
Best way to know what wedge to use is to spend a good bit of time at a driving range that has distances well marked. Use different swings (half, full, 3/4, etc) on your wedges & then you'll know what your distances are for each club.
As was stated in a previous post, each person hits each club differently. My full on 8 iron might be Shade's PW, for example. The next part of the equation is how well you can control each swing to get the shot you want out of the club. That trick there is where practice comes in!
What is the shortist and longist shot u should use an AW ?
It all depends on your game, not on anyone else's. You have to experiment and make those determinations for yourself.
I never liked calling it a "AW" anyway... I use most of my clubs for approaches, including 3 different wedges. Trying to call just one of them an approach wedge is a bit shortsighted. I don't really care what the manufacturer stamps on it... it's still a gap wedge which fills the hole between the PW and the the SW.
I have a pitching wedge, a gap wedge, and a sand wedge, but all 3 are used for approaches depending on the distance.
For me, I hit my GW 120 carry with full swings. I don't usually hit that may 1/2 or 3/4 swing shots with my GW, because I have a SW that I carry 105 and a LW that I carry 90 yards with. I don't see a need for trying to hit a 3/4 swing GW from say 100 yards when I've got my SW for those shots. HOW far anyone hits a GW also depends on exaxtl what loft the wedge is. Some approach or Gap wedges are 50 degree wedges, and some are 51 or 52 degrees. That alone can make a difference of 10 or so yards.
I carry two wedges these days, pitching and sand. PW is good for 105 yards and SW makes 95 if I hit them properly. Another set of wedges I still have from some years ago but don't play with has a Utility Wedge between PW and SW. They were 4* apart and my distances were 125, 115 and 105. The distance depends on a number of things. But, the most important aspect is how dependable it is for you.
I gotta be doing something really wrong as I can't hit my 60 degree very far at all maybe 45 yards with lots of mishits. How can I gain more distance with it. Yesterday I hit about 4 real good including one from 40 yards out that I put 3 inches from the cup and 2 others within 2 feet. all the others were awful. So I started using my sand wedge towards the end of the round and some good ones but I won't know until the grass grows thicker to counter act the bounce more.

Replace it with a 58°. Or forget it and just go with a 52° and a 56° like I do. I have two 58's and a 60 in my garage, and that's where they are going to stay.
I know from the past rick that you droped the lob wedge and I think I will also. But because Cobra like many others put out a 45 degree PW the matching GW is 50 degree. I would prefer a 52. I will just have to practice more with the SW. I am really good with the SW stab shot near the green getting great spin. At one time I did most of my pitching with a PW but it was 47 degrees I will see if the less loft on it will really make that much diferance. I need to practice the longer SW picthes like I did in the old days. And I think that shorter hitters can use a bigger club at the top end like a 2 Hybrid for longer shots into the wind or even a 1 hybrid.

BoB; we must be doing something rather different with the wedge. Where I practice they have a targets out at 50 and 75 yards. I use a 1/2 swing Lob wedge, choked down the just off the steel for the 50 yard target and a 3/4 swing for the 75 yard target. I used my laser to measure the distances at the range, and they are dead on, so I know the yardages are correct. But if you're sticking the ball inside 5 feet that often, I wouldn't be too quick to change what you're doing.
I think I need some time at the range to air out the 60 degree Lob Wedge maybe I am afraid of it and swing too easy. I t works great inside 30-40 yards. I need to get that out to at least 60-70. And maybe I need to move it back in my stance to a little back from center as i do hit it fat too many times. I have found out that all my Clubs are too long for me and I never liked choking up on a club I do with all of them now as it would cost quite a bit of money right now to have them redone. I have found that a Club that is too long will cause fat hits. So I now choke up 1/2" and am having much better results. The new Hybrids I had build are all built 1/2" shorter than the normal length.
Bob, you need to swing steeper...really focus on taking the club away on plane and getting into a solid top position..."thumbs up" in the backswing...do that and you'll hit it cleaner...
