thinking beyond technique ....!
information ...whats past the hole ?
is the putt downhill or uphill
read the break from the hole -> ball ...
look from both sides as well
assess if your lagging the putt .."safety first ...withen a few feet"
if not ...then your sinking the putt ....thats your ONLY thought
not "dont be short" or "dont hit it too far oh heck i might 3 putt"
if you miss you start again ...1 shot at a time
your body knows what to do to get the ball in the hole .....let it !
The best tips I can give you are, don't worry about the speed. Your mind has a good idea of how hard you have to hit the ball, so let yourself do that naturally. Read the line as best you can, even if it means you spend a little extra time looking at the hole from different angles to build confidence in your aim. And always remember, a putt left short will NEVER go in. Putt a little past the hole if you have to -- you just might make it anyway!
I believe that the cerebellum at the base of the brain knows exactly how far and along what line to putt and is the result of accumulated 'good putts'. It can read the green, establish the line and distance. This is transmitted to the body when it is relaxed and focussed on what it has to do and comes through as 'feel'. Where this 'feel' is felt may be individual. It can be encouraged by a consistent pre-putt routine and a positive expectancy as well as an image of the target firmly held in the mind's eye.
To me the feel is in the left hand which always finds the line when relaxed and my eyes/centre is on the putter edge. When the target is felt in the left hand with my eye on the putter edge and I maintain a clear image of the target, I simply use the 'feel' of the putter in my left hand and keep it constant through the swing. When this occurs correctly the ball always follows the line into the cup. When I 'go off' it comes back to tension and too much focus on the ball at the expense of the target. I average 25-30 putts for 18 holes.
The Quiet Eye..a great article. I believe that the information is also transmitted to the rest of the body as 'feel'. It is not the conscious mind that does it although it can control more of what the eye does, certainly. I will be examining that in my own putting. Thanks for the reference.
All I can say is reverse overlap grip. If your a righty grip the putter near the top with your left hand having your thumb straight down the shaft. The lift your index finger and slide your right hand under it with both thumbs going straight down the shaft. Then lightly place the index finger over the right hand. At first it might be weird but after a while you will putt better than ever.

Thanks for the grip description. My putting has been hurting my score for quite a while now, and I've tried just about everything. It's not that I'm missing the hole by a lot, I'm just not sinking any first putts. Funny, though, I haven't tried changing my grip, and your post reminded me of that!
Know that distance is more important than direction and here is a drill to help you out:
on the practice green putt out a ball any distance (you don't need to go to a hole if one is not available) then putt another ball 3/4 the distance, then 1/2 the distance and then 1/4 the distance.
