Probably a phase. I have found that when my greens/fairways percentages improve, there tends to be a mental gremlin that whispers 'You are playing better than you can." This tends to induce tension in the hands and speed up the swing and this is deadly to distance control. Do you have a pre-putt routine which involves relaxation of the hands/arms and a clear focus on the target and rhythm? This may help.
Basically just relax, loosen your putting grip, and keep the pendulum motion. Your mind has a good feel for the distance the ball will have to travel, so just trust your putting stroke. That, and remember, it's always alright to putt a little past the hole. You can make a putt with the right line and a little extra power, but a putt left short will NEVER go in.

A good practice aid for me when I struggle with distance control is to stand in the middle of the practice green with 6 balls and putt to the edge of the fringe in different directions. I try to putt the balls to the edge without actually going off the putting surface. I'm not putting to a hole, so I'm not target oriented. Judging the varying distances and speed to the fringe helps me regain my feel for controlling my distance once I'm out on the course. It works for me and I hope it will help you!
Sorry if i hijack this thread but Im having a problem with putting too. I cant seem to read the break right on the putting green it seems like i think im going to get it but then the putt ends up 12ft in the op direction. But I am good at putt-putt i got 4 holes in 1 last time i went to play putt putt. but on the putting green with the unevenness of it and the varying speed of the green i cant seem to get it down pat.
I'm sure you can tell there's a world of difference between putting on the artificial turf of most putt-putt courses and putting on real grass. If you want to become a better putter (and who doesn't?) I suggest you spend more time on the practice putting green and less time on putt-putt. With a little practice you'll get the hang of real grass in no time. They won't all go in....but you won't have to go through the windmill and into the clown's mouth to hole a putt!
So the pratice putting greens at the golf course are the place for me to pratice. ON the pratice putting green do you use the driving range balls and are their any rules or anything about it and eti.?

Range balls are for the range. While most places may let you use range balls on the putting green, you should use your own golf balls, as range balls are usually out of round and do not putt true.
The etiquette of practice putting greens is the same as that out on the course. Be considerate of those around you, don't hit the wrong ball, and leave the green in better shape than you found it. Most everyone else on the practice green is probably too engrossed in their own practice to be concerned with what you're doing. Unless you're not practicing the above mentioned etiquette. Everyone there has the same goal....practicing ways to improve their putting.
