topping the ball

How do you guys feel about the left heel coming up on the backswing? Some great players did this including Jack N. and Bobby Jones. I also have heard instructors say that if your not very flexible this is exceptable. Well, at this point I'm not very flexible and when I try to keep my left heel down and turn into the backswing I feel the muscles on my left side push me upwards then I think I try to correct this by bobbing back down... Top[ping the ball. However, If I let my left heel come up a bit the bobbing thing doesn't happen.
Is that weird? Supposedly what is the effect of letting your left heel come up a bit?

Actually I saw a video of my swing and it looks like sometimes when I bob back down my arms automatically try to correct it, my elbows bend a little and thats when I top the ball.

Sounds like you have analysed your problem with the help of video very well.

IMHO, in your case, I believe the raising of the left heel is part of the 'fluidity' of your swing and is implemental in your returning square to the centre for impact. When you 'try' to keep your heel on the ground you are curtailing the backswing and then doing things to compensate and thus losing fluidity.

If you cannot maintain a fluid swing without the heel lift then why not continue it 'if it works'.

1. You say that you are lined up correctly, one check is to lie a club on the ground for a target line and make sure you are parallel to it. If you have done this then:

2. Make sure your grip is neutral or a little strong not weak (do you under stand that these terms do not me strenght?).

3. Work first with irons and think of throwing the toe of the club at the ball and down the line to the target.
