sliding into the ball

i have fought this my whole life (im 27). it has improved but it is somehitng that i have to re-check every 6 months or so.

my legs get over active and move laterally forward.

last night at thr driving rangei hit a small bucket of balls and hit about 35 of 50 bad. i was depressed and as i was leaving my dad told me that when i am not hitting well he thinks my legs sway too much and i dont use the upper body to turn thru the ball. i found 3 balls on the range and hit them w/ this new thought and PURED them into the night sky.

amazing how one thing can change things.

g'day

This is a marvellous observation by good ole dad. If the centre moves backwards through the back swing, there has to be a compensatory move forwards to get back to the 'impact' position in the downswing. Also, most golfers do not swing through but actually try to hit and so the swing after moving backwards becomes a lunge at the ball rather than a swing through to the target.

All top golfers rotate backwards on a braced, slightly flexed right leg with the weight on the inner sole of the right foot. Then there is a shifting of weight onto the inside of the left foot on the down swing. Some pros use this as the signal to begin the downswing. So really there is rotation around two separate pivot points but those points were already established in the set up so effectively the centre is rotating around itself. If the centre has moved forwards or backwards from its original position at impact then the arms/hands
have to act independently and tend to rotate or tighten.

If you get a sense of 'swinging where you are' in relation to the target and a sense of the head remaining at a constant height from the ball through the swing, then you will be rotating properly. Also the ball is only to 'get in the way of the swing', not to be 'hit'.

I am only writing all of this in order to 'explain' the mechanics of it. As you have found out, once the balanced position is set the swing takes care of itself and you hit 'pure shots'. I hope others can learn from this as I feel it is absolutely vital.

GREAT STUFF!

There are things in your golfing life that will always get you back on track, this statement is one that you should always remember.

It's good your dad noticed this, and that your game improved. I feel my game is going down the drain.

I am fairly depressed right now after shooting 117 today... got a couple o' pars and bogeys, but mostly doubles. I am just feeling awful right now, and I sort of feel like I have no potential and I might as well quit.

64 on the front 9, 53 on the back.

We've all been there. Most of us more than once. Don't let your scores dictate how you feel about yourself or your game. Tomorrow is another day, and it might just be the day you've been looking for. How will you ever know if you quit? Hang in there....it gets better!

You are right on track for having played for five months.

A score that high simply lacks the fundamentals.

Take a lesson or at least make yourself a student of the game.

Try to remain facing forward (90º to the target line) and when downswinging, imagine bringing the hands to the inside of the left thigh before letting the hips release...don't worry, the hips will release no matter what you do.
