There are days when I strike the ball well that I can the distance that I expect. I hit the ball right on the button. But then there are those days when I hit the ground first - sometimes 6 inches behind - which of course reduces the distances significantly.
What are the main causes and how can I avoid it? I know sometimes it's just caused by a lack of concentration, ball position, and/or looking up to early. Are there any other reasons that would cause this? I want to know what to look out for.
I tend to hit more fat shots than thin so I would like to eliminate this problem with my game.

Fat shots are "usually" a result of a "steep" swing path. This is the same move that causes slices or pulls. If the clubhead is coming into the ball over the "plane line", the results can vary from what you are experiencing in fat shots to pulled shots to slices. It doesn't have so much to do with your concentration, ball position or anything else, but mostly is due to having the club come into the ball on the proper path. Fix the path and the fat shots go away.
