Stiff vs Regular flex

I've been shopping for fairway woods recently, trying out TM, Titleist, Sonartec, etc..
One thing I'm tring to decide on is shaft flex. I noticed that I was either hooking or pushing the ball somewhat consitently. Is is possible that the regular flex is too whippy and I should try a stiff flex? I hit the TM 580s in stiff and they felt pretty darn good.
I know I should go to a launch monitor and get checked for the right flex, but I'm just curious if it's possible that the stiffer shaft would help correct the leftish tendency.
Thanks
Jacob

The Push and hook have the same swing path. Does your ball start right and hook left of the target? If a shaft is too stiff for a person it will send the ball right.
You may want to increase the size of the grip on the clubs you have and see if that decreases the hook first (change the grip on one club first - 7or 5 iron). If the size of your grips are too small it can cause an early release (hook) and trouble with timing of the clubhead.

The ball starts straight and draws slightly or starts dead left and straight. Only happens with woods/driver not with irons.
I don't feel like I'm taking a huge rip with the club, just a tempoed swing.

If your swing speed is normal, a normal flex is fine. However, if your swing speed is very fast, a stiff flex will provide you with more distance & control.

jbob, to answer your question yes. A stffer flex shaft may help the ball not pull as much. When a shaft is to flexible it releases early and will come into the ball closed more then it should be. When a shaft is tooo stiff then it will release later and not be able to catch up at impact and tend to push the ball a little too much.

bates, "If your swing speed is normal, a normal flex is fine" What is normal in the swing speed? also, club makers want to boost egos because they believe it will sell more clubs. Macho men dont want to hit regular flex shafts. So club makers, callaway for one, changed it to where now a club that says stiff flex is more like a cross between regular and stiff and x stiff is a cross between stiff and x stiff. My graffalloy blue stiff shaft is stiffer then the x stiff shaft i used to have in my driver. Also, if a person has a fairly decent swing it is hard to not attain enough club head speed to warrent, by todays standards, a stiff shaft. According to your previous posts you are new to golf so be carefull of what questions you answer because what may end up happening is you will give advice to someone and it might conflict with a more knowledgeable golfers advice, therefore leaving the person asking the question confused on whose advice to go with.

Shootin4par,

This isn't the first time somebody on a golf forum "thought" they were answering a question correctly, or gave what they thought was good advice that was, in fact, questionable at best.

Some of us recognize the questionable stuff when we see it and some don't. You obviously have keen eyes. I've said many times here that, "I am not an instructor" but some of the advice I've seen given by 20+ handicappers and very young players has to taken with a grain of salt. Each player asking for help is different so we encourage as many "solutions" as possible. Even if some of those solutions may do more harm than good. That's for the receiver of the advice to decipher.

Opinions given are just that, opinions. However, as a Moderator, if I see something stated here as fact, I make sure to do a little homework to guarantee that its right. We certainly don't have all the answers but we'll look'em up!

I see your point, we just need to make sure we dont have too many chiefs and not enough indians, it can keep things running smoother

I have been on other forums and this is the best, people in this forum know their stuff and the moderation is great.

YES!

Sorry, couldn't let it go...

I think you should try them both and see which one feels better...and is more effective! All the charts in the world say I should be using an R flex, but I hit a S flex better...!
