Putts per round

At first glance the less putts you have per round would mean you shot better. Right? Not necessarily so...................

I think the terminology has changed to something like putts(per GIR) per round or something like that.
But the true 'number of putts per round" can be a bit misleading.
You can have 18 putts per round and shoot 90. Also you can have 36 putts per round and shoot 72(assuming par is 72)
If you miss the green in regulation and are on the fringe and then chip up close to the hole, you have ONE PUTT on that hole. If you do that every hole you will shoot 72. But let's say you missed the green badly, chipped up to the fringe, then chipped close the hole and then putted in. One putt and a bogie. Do that every hole and you shoot 90 and still have 18 putts per round.

Now let's say you hit every green in regulation and 2-putt every green. You shot 72 and had............................. 36 putts.

'Putts per round' are quite misleading if you don't also take into account GIR.

That's exactly why the PGA Tour Stat calculates Average Putts Per GIR just like you said. They also track the Putts per round but just as your illustration pointed out, I am about 2 putts better per round than the leader on the PGA Tour Stats...not because I shoot better but because I miss more greens than he does and therefore my first "putt" is a chip...

I still don't understand stats fully. Like longest driver. What a great idea..the top two have never won a tournament on tour in their entire lives. It seems like a joke almost since the stat can include three woods and irons, if the player wishes.

The least putts I ever had in a round was 26. I missed 16 of 18 greens that day and got up and down on a lot of holes. If you miss a lot of greens, your putts per round will probably be lower as you'll get the opportunity to get a chip close to the hole and one putt.

I used to keep stats before but it became too demoralizing after a while. Too many missed greens. Too many missed up and downs. If I were to start keeping stats again, I would keep track of putts per round and putts per GIR. I think putts per GIR is a much "truer" way of guaging how well you're putting. Putts per round tell me how well my short game in general is and doesn't reflect solely on my putting.

My best gauge to how I'm putting is......if the ball goes in the hole, I'm putting great. If the ball doesn't go in the hole, I'm putting lousy. Simple, but it works for me!

I have improved my short game HEAPS!!!!! over the last few months.....4 months ago I had 40 putts for 18 holes and shot a 95!!!!
Now I have cut my putts down to aprox 32 putts per round and my scores are getting more consistent between 80-85, which I didn't have at the start of the year......e.g one week I'ld shoot a 87 then the other week I'ld shoot a 92!

G.I.R certainly help tho....I'ld love to get on every green in reg but I usually don't get enough distance on the longer holes :o( ...I make on average 7/ 18 g.i.r

have hit 12 greens twice ....
2 weeks ago i hit 1 green and shot 11 over , nuffin was workin that day ...lol
2 yrs ago i hit 1 green and shot 8 over , with 19 putts

the chip is the first putt at our course , average green is 18yards across and round !

the old fellas on wednesday have "count the putts" and it is over several rounds thru the year with a trophy at stake
ive seen some of them layup from 50yards "to the fringe" and chip from a few feet off
cheats huh

If you miss the greens by just a little, you're more likely to 1-putt.

I've had 34 putts in a round but shot 72 - hitting nearly every green and not making any birdies.

25-30 is good on just about any level, I think.

Wait you get money for tournaments? In the USA a junior or an am. taking money is a big no no. I think the rule is $700 in prizes per year to stay an Am. Well it looks like GG won't be comming over here to win the US Womens Am.

Uhh, how does 52 putts last round sound yesterday? Refer to my thread 'putting dilemma'.

It depends, robertg...
You might have gotten on every green in 1 and shot 2-under anyway.

1st and 2nd putt distances are important stats to keep track of too. They tend to tell you the whole story much better.
