I'm just wondering but how many of you guys plan on working out this winter to improve your golf games. Living in Michigan there is no chance durring the winter to play golf unless you go south so the closest thing you can get to golf is hitting a ball ten yards into a net. If you ever hear the announcers talk about Vijay they talk all about how he spends the more time on the range and in the gym than anyone else combine. Golf Digest also had an artical where they talked about what Tiger does when he works out even though it was kind pointless. Tiger is supposed to be very quit about his conditioning and very few people get to see him work out. But it is know that he can bench press over 300 pounds and loves to run. Well, enough of me typing aimlessly, let me know what you think.
I play golf year round so it isn't really of question to me. I also work out at the gym year round. I think it's beneficial to my golf game. There's a reason why most of the golfers on Tour work out.
I think if you're stronger, you'll be able to increase your swing speed without having to swing harder. All things equal, an easy swing for someone who can bench 150 pounds is going to be slower than an easy swing for someone who can bench 200. Of course, there are other ways to boost swing and clubhead speed but I believe working out helps.
Then there's cardiovascular conditioning. If your scores start to drop off at the end of your rounds due to fatigue, I don't see why cardiovascular conditioning wouldn't help.
I'm about the laziest dude you'll run into regarding working out. Recently I started a vigorous workout routine of pushups And you know what, just something as simple as that has helped. I have gained at least 10 yards on my drives. I do 3 sets of 20 push ups each night before I go to sleep. That's about as much workout as you'll get out of me, and prior to this I had never done any weight training in my life. Maybe in the future I'll get into it more, but I doubt it.
On the other hand one of my golf buddies is a physical trainer. He's no bigger than 5'7" and just one big muscle it seems. He's so buff that it looks like he even works out his nose. Anyway, with all that muscle and training he does, he'll poke the ball out just as far as I do. Averaging 275 or so.
All in all, I also believe that working out will certainly have more benefits than downfalls for your game.
I play more active sports than golf in "winter" here (GA), and I was wondering if anyone had an excercise routine (weights, whatever) for the off season? I still hit balls occasionally, but rates go up in the winter and I play less - baseball, basketball, roller hockey take up more of my time.
So, where's a good off-season program for staying in good golfing shape? Is there any? I'm mid-twenties and probably average health, weight, etc.
I'm planning on going to the range at least once a week (hopefully) There is a range here where you can hit balls under a cover which is heated and everything. You just hit to the normal range, only your under a cover so even if its raining you can still hit balls.
As for a workout...I'll continue my 3 days a week for 30 minutes a day.
I press 260 lbs of dirt bike thru the woods for a few hours at a time all Winter long.
Oh and when it's warm enough I play golf also. Really it's probably warm enough to play(comfortably) about 25 times during the Winter here. I'm not into the covered cart with a heater and running out to hit a ball when its 35 degrees. To me that's . Of course some people might think it crazy for 46 year old to be banging trees with a dirt bike also
remote, I was at the range once hitting balls next to someone receiving a lesson. The instructor merely advised him to do at least 20 pushups everyday to build strength. I guess anything helps.
Yeah actually one of my classes at school is called conditioning. It's kinda a joke for some kids but I take it pretty serriously since I want to be amazing next year. So I've been basically working out my entire body at school then I get home and run 2 miles which has just been amazing for my body too. It has reduced the ammount of body fat which has made me lighter and my heart runs better and walking 18 has become easier than ever. Also it has built a good core for my balance too.
I intend to play most of this winter, weather permitting. Parts of January and February may however be questionable. I'll play on anything over freezing as long as there isn't too much snow.
Well here in Texas the weather has been in the 90's so winter has been haveing little to no effect yet. But I am sure the it will get cold in the next few weeks. And since my college golf class is at 9 oclock in the morning and it doesnt end till mid december I assume unless a weather change occurs I will be playing in the cold.
