Scooping PUSHING & OCCASIONAL SLICE

I have a problem in my swing.

I play right handed and have a problem with my right hand dominating the swing i.e picking the club up on a steep angle and scooping at the ball at impact producing high weak shots, and cannot quare the club face enough majority of shots go to the right.

How can i activate my left side more and get out of this habit which has only happened recently

PLEASE HELP because my scores are going higher each week I play.

okay, i don't get the right hand dominant thing so maybe someone else can help you on that. i do know some things that can fix the push and slice. a lot of it starts with the set up.

one reason people hit those pop ups is because they tee the ball too low. this encourages them to hit the ball at a steep angle because they know they have to get down to hit the ball. when you tee the ball, you want to make sure at least half of the ball is above the top of the driver.

next comes ball position. you want to make sure that the ball is teed off of your left armpit and not in the middle of your stance.

your stance should be wider than that of your irons. if you find yourself having trouble balancing, you may want to take a little off of your swing or spread your stance to create more balance. have about 60% of your weight off of your right foot.

then go ahead and rip it. the golf swing starts with the address so hopefully this helps you out. if you're already doing all of this, you may want to clarify where your problem lies or someone else may be able to provide more help for you. good luck with your swing!

I hit my driver well but irons are my problem, even with a strong left hand grip the clubface stays open with my right hand not crossing the left through impact, does this make sense

what do your divots look like? i imagine they will point towards the left of your target. this means your swing is an outside to in swing. when you have this kind of swing path, it makes it more difficult for you to square the club, hence the slice. what you have to do is go from that swing to an inside to out path.

on your backswing, you want to make sure your shoulders make a 90 degree turn. make sure your back faces the target. next, make sure you turn with your right hip and the club will drop. the club will follow the hip turn through impact. The club should rotate from inside (close to the feet) to outside (the ball). When your swing is inside to outside, it makes it easier to square the club more naturally.

  • Strengthen your grip (Band-aid fix)

If you can imagine a neutral grip: Both thumbs point directly down the middle of the grip exposing the first two knuckles on your left hand (fore- and middle-finger).

To strengthen your grip, rotate BOTH left and right hands to the right, as to expose three or all four knuckles on the left hand.

  • Relax your grip

By holding the club tightly, it restricts your wrists from rotating freely throughout the swing. Try it. Take your normal grip and then squeeze the club as tight as your can. Now take a practice swing and notice how the clubface can not square itself to the target. Now relax your grip and make your normal practice swing, see how nicely the club face squares to the target almost without trying.

  • Vijay Drill

Take a towel or club head cover and tuck it under your left armpit. Make a few swings without dropping the towel. What this does it keep your left arm connected to your chest. Which ever direction your chest moves your arm will follow. This alleviates the ‘casting’ move to begin the downswing, which causes the outside-in swing path = slice. This drill will not work if you begin your downswing with a ‘reverse-pivot’ type of move. This move will re-route the club outside the target-line and as your body rotates toward the target your arms will follow, resulting in an outside-in path. In order for this drill to work you must start the downswing properly. Weight shift to your left followed by the uncoiling of the upper body.

Of all the drills I found the Vijay drill to work the best for me.

Irons require a steeper attack than your driver. Are you swinging them like your driver? This can cause all sorts of strange behaviors.

Stand closer to the ball and use a more vertical attck. Keep your irons above your shoulder on your back swing.

A divot is not a bad thing as long as 1) it comes after where the ball was located and 2) you're not on a rubber mat.

I used to scoop with my irons.i was tending to hit through and up,hitting down on the ball has helped me and with weight a little bit more on the left.hitting down on the ball helps it go up in the way the club is designed,i also found that a rushed iron swing meant that my club slid right under the ball, contact with club and ball was very short pand produced the high weak shot.hit down on the ball and imagine following through as if hitting another ball 2 inches in front of the original, this will ensure longer period of contact between ball and clubhead which produces stronger shot.
