By "square" I don't mean in the middle of the clubhead or "on the screws". I mean with the clubhead square at impact(meaning not open and cutting across the ball, inducing a slice spin).
I've got the time to do so...seeing as I've already graduated school, but I don't have the money. Where I hit balls at, a bucket depending on size is 5 - 10 bucks. I mean if I hit balls once a day I'm spending 50 bucks a week, that gets pricy. But when you can walk on to a course anywhere and say "I'm Vijay Singh" and they give you whatever you what its easier. haha.
See, I have an advantage there. I work for a golf course, so I get free range balls at golf at three courses owned by the city (one of which I work at) It makes it easier on the pocket, but not on the hands. One day I hit 500 balls. I had hit around 200 the day before. Let me tell you, I was in pain!

I think more golf courses and whatnot would do well for themselves to create "range memberships": $500 and all the range balls you can hit for a year. Or some price. Lots of people would go for that, and if memberships were such a bad idea financially, no place would do them. It gets people to the course where they buy food, rounds of golf, and bring their friends.
I.ve always thought what golfgeek said above.i asked a local driving range if they had membership, but the best they could offer was a ten per cent discount for high usage.
I don't swing very hard, i make sure my swing is rythmic and i center the ball at impact. The harder i swing, the more distance i lose due to impure contact. I play a Titleist driver, with Titleist drivers you have to hit pure to get distance, and they are very unforgiving if you hit off center. That's my secret to hitting 300 plus yds.
For the past week or 2 I've been really baffled by how pros can drive 300+ yards? Is it due to a down hill course and weather conditions (i.e. strong back wind blowing behind the ball etc.) or is it all technique?
I think I have a good technique and I can drive an average of about 245-255 yards at the golf range, but the golf range I go to is up hill so I never know how far I'm actually driving. I use to go to the range and work on my distance everytime but now I've realised that it's a bad mentality to take onto the practice range. I now concentrate more on technique, working on rhythm, tempo, shape of swing etc, rather than trying to hit the ball as far as posible. I think when you have the right technique, the distance will come naturally but will I ever drive 300+ yards like pros?
Can you run a sub-4 minute mile? Throw a 95 mile an hour fastball? Complete the Tour de France?
You have to bear in mind, these guys are professionals. Not only that, there are, for example, 125 fully-exempt players on the U.S. PGA Tour. That's 125 guys out of the 6 billion on earth (check me if I'm wrong on that last number) who can play golf at that level.

Some can realy hit it 300 yards, other need the elevated tee and a little wind to hit it 300 yards. if you hit it 250 on the driving range, and maybe it is not realy up hill, the range balls are about 10 to 20 yards shorter of the tee than your new ball out of the bag. I used to play with a man who was breifly on the PGA tour and he always used an iron on his second shots on all par fives, he was a 300 yard hitter..
It isn't how far...I went to a European tour event last week here in Jakarta and the guys were hitting it far, but not much farther than the better drives you would see at your driving range on any given day...what they were doing that was so impressive was swinging sooooo easy, maintaining their form throughout the swing and finishing in perfect balance...results of this were fairly long shots, but more importantly being able to pick the side of a 20 yard wide fairway they wanted to play to and hitting the spot from 280...
BTW, my best drive was on flat ground and finished rolling at around 330-340...rock hard fairways cut low in the middle of the day in the middle of summer, light tail wind, absolutey perfectly struck shot on the sweet spot, hx hot (distance ball), hit with draw...for all I know it hit a manhole cover because it was well over my usual...
Point is if a hack like me can pull off a drive like that on occasion, I have no problem imagining a Pro pulling it off on a fairly regular basis...
