Around a month ago my Hs golf coach fixed my drive slice, i was hitting straight and around 230 yards every shot. I was in heaven and shooting mid 80s average. Now about a week ago i did no changes but all the sudden my ball has a very, very severe hook off the tee, around a 100 yds. This hook also occurs with my 5 wood off the t and fairway. Its ruining my game, im now shooting high 90s. I looked all over for answers and hoping i may find help here. I can send a video if it is needed.
where does ball start? if you are right handed does it start to the right and hook all the way, really far to the left? if left handed does it start left and go to the right?
i was kind of doing the same thing a while ago but then i had to change my grip and i was to close to the ball, i dont know if it that might help but it help for me.
Bigjohn, I find most hooks come from the left hand grip turned too far to the right. Sounds like your coach changed your grip and you hit it straight for a while by not releasing. Now that you are releasing you get a hook. You will have to turn your left hand back to nuetral and keep releasing.
Good golfing, Gary
Suffered from the hooks my whole life. You've been given great advice about grip and swing path. When I start hooking the ball the majority of the time its a grip problem. You'll be amazed how easy it is for you to change your grip with out noticing it. A slight moving of the thumb can make a big difference.
Here's something that has helped me. I'll take my club and grip it in front of me and then squeeze hard. If my grip is shutting the face closed it will usually show up when I squeeze the grip. I then adjust my grip and squeeze again until the face stays square and then hit the ball with my normal grip pressure. Works great for me maybe it will help you.

Excellent advice! I am in exactly your situation bigjohn. I was slicing consistently with long irons and woods (and of course the driver). I found I was severely coming OTT and my clubface was open at impact. NOT a good combination!
Well, per Tiger Woods's recommendation in his book How I Play Golf -- and of course swing path adjustment via my instructor -- I am now hooking consistently... in all honestly a much better 'problem' than slicing. It means you are getting through to the ball on an inside path and simply either rotating your forearms too much, or your grip is too strong.
Your path could also be too far inside, but I doubt that is the problem.

Just do less of what your teacher said, you learned that it worked so you are just doing it too much.
