"Late Release"

Hi, i have been experimenting down the range with holding my release of the clubhead until the as late as possible , now this feels very strange and maybe a touch out of control through this part of the swing i must add i'm not swinging fast but the accelaration of the club is very fast, and maybe alot of room for error, i do seem to make good contact with say 6 out of 10 shots but this may just be because its something new and i'm not used to it ,is this correct and is this how you better ball strikers out release the clubhead, and did it feel strange to you a first?

I am trying to do exactly what you are talking about, and yes, it feels very strange, as you're not casting as usual... every good ball-striker creates clubhead lag. Bringing the club straight down and not releasing it feels much different than your previous swing, in which you probably just swung with your arms and, although it felt like you were releasing at the end, you were releasing even at the top.

How far into your downswing do you release the club , looking at the swing as a clock face and your and arms hands at the lowest part of the swing is 6 o'clock and being above the ball i would say i am at about 7 o'clock when i release would you say thats about right?

I think for some the emphasis should be on maintaining a light grip and allowing the club to release on it's own. For me, the feeling is pulling the butt of the club back to the ball from the top of the swing rather than "pushing" the head of the club to the ball. The "pull" feel will maintain your angle much longer creating the lag desired for effortless distance.

Lefty playing right worked well for Moe Norman.
