Fixing over the top swing/ good cues?

Happy Holidays to all. I just came back from a lesson with a pro who uses a terrific video computer program. I highly recommend finding a pro who does make use of this technology, especially if you are a beginner.. I learned more about my swing in one lesson than in my previous 15-20 lessons combined.

Anyway, having seen myself, I now fully understand what is meant by an over the top swing. My pro told me that I must 'Drop my hands" to begin my downswing. My questions are:
1. Is there a word picture, analogy, or cue that you have found to be successful in curing this problem? I have found that phrases such as, "Imagine that you are..." work best for me, but my pro didn't have any catch phrases along those lines.
2 Is there a training aid, video, etc. that is very helpful? I already own "The Inside Approach," but that hasn't helped. I also once had a pro suggest that I place a box just to the right of the ball, the idea being that an outside-in swing would hit the box. Well, I rarely hit the box, but still have the problem.

Thanks for your help.

Poke a tee in the hole of the butt end of the clubs grip. When on the range work on swinging the tee to the target rather than thinking of hitting the ball. This will keep your wrists set or hinged longer approaching impact reducing the "over the top move" .

try teeing the ball up a little in your stance and address teh ball with the toe of your club and when you swing, swing out to try and hit the ball in the center of the club.

A little thing I do is in the backswing I use my left arm a little more than my right, and instead of trying to throw my right side out I start the downswing with my left arm and as I work my way down I start using more force from my right side. It gets the swing on a better plane if you can visualize that you are working back down on the swing path you created in the backswing.

I hope this is somewhat helpful.

I try to slow down my downswing. The over the top move for me occurs when I really try to go after the ball. Once I am at the top of my back swing I try to let gravity work and allow my arms to drop and initiate the downswing. I practice in front of a mirror and I can now tell the difference of how this physically feels when I come over the top vs. swinging. Keeping your right elbow close to your side on the way down also promotes an inside-->out swing path. (refer to the 4th image in this sequence)

I have the same problem. I try very hard to keep the shaft LAGGING. One visualization cue I use is to pretend the butt end of the shaft (as you start your downswing) is pointing at the ball.

This website is FULL of great pictures of good tour swings to emulate:

You sound like a visual learner so here is a tip that works for me. At the top of your back swing you will notice that a line out from your left arm points about 45% out to the right, swing the arm and club out on that line. That will get you out of coming over the top but if you slice you will also need to work on your release.
