I was down the range yesterday and after experimenting with a few things it just clicked , i my 7 iron is normally about 150 but i was absolutely amazed when the ball was flying past 150 and landing at about 165/ 170 with less effort then it felt like i was spinning my body though the ball before i hit it and shanking it every time, any one got any ideas how to stop shanking ? This is so frustrating cause for a while there i thought i had it .
Went down the range again today hoping it would sort itself out but no by the end of it i was just happy to make contact let alone the quality of the shot! But at least the golf gods let me know what the feeling of really flushing a iron does feel like with no effort but what goes up certainly did come down i'm playing on Monday i'm scared to go .i think i slide my hips to much lateraly and leave the club behind how do i stop this ?
You got that right! I'm pretty careful about that too, otherwise I would probably get booted. But watto, I understand your frustration. One day, I was swinging perfectly, and then the next I could barely get Pitching Wedges off the ground. Talk about frustrating. The key is not to try and kill the ball. Just swing smoothly through the ball. Pretend that the ball isn't even there. You are merely trying to the the ground underneath the ball.
Here is the drill I used to correct my younger brother's weak, open faced shots. It'll help you to.
1. Tee up a ball, preferrably on a broken tee, because you don't want to waste good tees. Push the tee into the ground enough so that the ball is only about a penny's thickness off the ground.
2. Swing smoothly, but don't try to hit the ball. Focus on only sending the tee flying.
3. Keep pushing the tee lower and lower into the ground, until you have pushed it below ground level. Concentrate on only sending the tee flying. It'll help a lot!

Take two clubhead covers, put one under each arm pit and practice swinging keeping them in place. This drill will help you connect your body to your arms, hands and club.

watto: shanking has been my problem also. went to a pro and for me i kept coming up out of the swing, thus pushing my hands outward and bringing the hosel into the ball.
what I have to work on is keeping my butt out and head level and staying with the shot, also to return my hands back to the same position as they were when set.
but the best thing is to see local PGA pro to get straightened out as quickly as possible.
